Co-Production Definitions

• Flinders, Wood & Centre (2015:265) define the origins of co-production within an
epistemological and methodological concern that academics should move away from an “ivory
tower” approach to scholarship. It is intimately concerned with how the generation of academic
knowledge shapes – and is shaped by – the social, political and policy environment in which it is
situated.
• Similar to PR, ‘co-production’ has become a terminological ‘catch-all’ for numerous participatory,
action, community-based and collaborative research approaches, each of which have distinct
(and sometime competing) histories, traditions, logics, rationales and methods’ (Thomas-
Hughes, 2017:232).
• The wide variety of communities taking up co-productive research has resulted in a varying
understanding of what co-production processes are. Simply, there is no single framework or
‘right’ way of doing co-productive research. The process is developed in line with the needs of
the participants and their communities (which are also notably, not static entities, but ever-
changing).
• As a methodology, co-production seeks to bring the knowledges of communities outside
of academia to the fore in order to better inform policy and practice for those
communities. In doing so, co-production’s concern is one of addressing power imbalance
between academic and community partners so that they can work together in more
complementary and effective ways.
• In this way, co-production holds the potential to motivate and facilitate social change in
the interests of communities engaged in the research process, through ‘greater
representation of marginalized groups in research; data that are more representative of
community needs; and increased opportunities for local capacity- building and
empowerment’ (Guta, Flicker, & Roche, 2013:433).
C O - P R O D U C T I O N - D E F I N I T I O N S
• Bell & Pahl (2018:108) note how co-production processes dually work to critique powerful
institutions, and crucially, have the potential to ‘empower communities to collectively construct
new lifeworlds’ and ‘help [to] resist potentially damaging policy or development’.
• Facer & Enwright (2016:11) also hone in on the importance of co-productive methodologies for
querying, creating, and (re)developing lived realities: how we produce knowledge, scholarship
and ideas about reality matters for the stories we are able to tell about ourselves and our
society, and for how we frame our response to the changing realities of the contemporary world.
If there are communities and cultures who are systematically excluded from these accounts of
reality, then our stories of ourselves will be impoverished. If there is expertise and insight –
whether in communities or in universities – that remains untapped, then society as a whole will
lose powerful resources to help tackle the complex problems that it faces today. (Facer &
Enwright, 2016:11)
• Again, the running concern here is with power distribution, and the ways in which it can be
equalised.
