Melinda Gates Foundation | 9 OPEN ACCESS POLICY* – THE ELEMENTS Publications will be deposited in a specified repository(s) with proper tagging of metadata. All publications shall be published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Generic License (CC BY 4.0) or an equivalent license. All publications shall be available immediately upon their publication, without any embargo period The foundation will require that data underlying the published research results be immediately accessible and open. ELEMENT 1 ELEMENT 2 ELEMENT 3 ELEMENT 4 DISCOVERABLE AND ACCESSIBLE ONLINE OPEN ACCESS TERMS NO EMBARGO UNDERLYING DATA The foundation will pay the reasonable fees in order to publish on the terms our Open Access Policy. ELEMENT 5 REASONABLE FEES *As of January 1, 2015 our Open Access policy is effective for all new agreements. The foundation is granting a two year transition period for policy compliancy. As of January 1, 2017, all publications will be required to publish on our open access terms.

Immediate Changes As
of January 1, 2015, a non-negotiable open access clause was added to all grant agreements. Melinda Gates Foundation | 14 CHRONOS - BENEFITS Gates Foundation Grantees & Researchers Publishers • Centralized process to report and measure its funded research. • Ensure compliance with minimal operational burden and overhead. • Authors receive clear guidance on how to comply with the policy. • Individuals and institutions no longer required to manage APC payments. Publishers have a consistent way of receiving payment for articles funded by the Gates Foundation.
