Slides from a lightning talk at Sydney Joomla User Group 12 NOV 2013. The strange title refers to the fact that this information was relevant 10 years ago and still is today. Despite the advances in social media and video sharing, email marketing is still a highly effective marketing channel. It's easy to do, relatively inexpensive and results can be tracked.
If you're a website owner and you're not regularly sending email newsletters, you're missing out on a huge opportunity. Depending on what you do, you'll sell more, convert more or retain more in 2014 with email marketing.
If you're a web developer, rather than continually look for new web clients, consider providing email marketing to your existing customers. Creating and managing campaigns for customers is easier than building websites and it provides regular cash flow.
There are two approaches when it comes to Joomla. Either use an extension like AcyMailing (http://www.acyba.com/en/acymailing.html). Or use a third party service like MailChimp or Campaign Monitor.
Like anything new, the challenge is getting started. If you decide to publish a fortnightly newsletter, you'll need to create a plan for 26 topics. Here is my 4 step approach:
1. Braintorm 6 categories - 10 minutes
2. Brainstorm 5 topics for each category - 30 minutes
3. Write outline for 2 articles - 20 minutes
4. Write 1st article - 1 hour
Yes - you really can write an article in one hour. Sure it might need a couple of revisions, but this approach gets you out of procrastination mode and a long way towards your first email distribution. If you then write the second article, you've got a head start on your publishing schedule to give you a buffer if things get busy.
