Since the Gold Rush, where free lunches used to be served at brothels lining the streets of early San Francisco, the Bay Area has loved food. Food has played such an important role since the 1800s and San Francisco has been a place of culinary pioneering - which it continues to be to this day. Here’s a list of the top 5 restaurants in San Francisco:

1. Kokkari Estiatorio, Zagat rating: 29/30

Kokkari is an elegant and long standing restaurant located on 200 Jackson Street. Its menu features Greek classics that are loved by diners and critics alike. The interior of Kokkari is decorated with handmade pottery and features a large fireplace that enhances the elegance and the dining experience.

2. Gary Danko, Zagat rating: 29/30

Gary Danko, named after its award winning Chef, Gary Danko, serves up classics like roast Maine lobster and lamb loin. Gary Danko is located on 800 North Point Street and tied for first place with Kokkari Estiatorio.

3. Quince, Zagat rating: 28/30

Chef Michael Tusk delivers fine French-Italian dishes at this recently renovated restaurant located on 470 Pacific Avenue. All ingredients used at Quince come from local farms in Northern California.

4. Acquerello, Zagat rating: 28/30

The Truffle Tasting Menu is one of the many highlights of Acquerello, where diners go for the experience itself as they do for the food. Acquerello is located on 1722 Sacramento Street and it an excellent choice if the occasion calls for a romantic establishment.

5. Boulevard, Zagat rating: 28/30

Chef Nancy Oakes has prepared a fine menu of New American cuisine all with a wonderful view of the Bay Bridge. Boulevard’s interior has vintage French decorations and quickly became a favorite among San Francisco diners.
