This presentation was prepared for the UCLA Alumni Day Future Jobs panel discussion. The presentation covers a brief history of online milestones and trends since 1996, the current intoxication of social media, what the sometimes erratic and often chaotic timeline and landscape means for jobs, what's next in the industry, and how to unlock the potential of it.   • Digital is so broad. It can mean so many things form the broadest “Being Digital” (reference to NN 1996 book) to specific multimedia, virtual reality, band-width, cable, and Internet. ... This talk is more narrow. It’s a personal take. Comes from the ghettos I grew-up in… The panel is about future jobs and unlocking potential.   • Early limitations of technology defined “experience” boundaries. When content was King, there were Portal wars Start me ups, B2B, eCommerce (“e” was in fornt of everything “ Clicks and mortar” play on bricks and mortar ironic, telling that “monetization” came AFTER the crash and burn after the bubble burst all those baby MBAs packed moved home to live with mom and dad, then got jobs on wall street a few years later Trends move like waves across time and the business landscape, eventually getting discarded or absorbed into a bigger swell. They become the “cost of doing business” You can see clear correlations between technology milestones and landscape trends things like Cloud Computing (2006 Amazon Web Services), crowdsourcing and all the other platform building  we haven’t seen their real impact yet BLOGS: blogger.com, livejournal, blogspot, wordpress SYNDICATION/CURATION/AGGREGATION: delicious.com/ Clicker.com Loud3r SELF SERVICE: Surverymonkey.com Usertesting.com Thingfo.com
  • Fun. Evocative. Uses a bit of dramatic license. Still…
  • Job titles are invented for what is needed at the time but can very easily get absorbed into other jobs and become the norm Don’t latch on to your job title I started my career as a Fashion Designer, then turned into a Production Artist  to Conceptualist  to Information Architect  etc… Don’t worry at what is below the timeline – if you are covered on the above the timeline then you can apply that to any of the below
  • (Augmented reality and 3D televisions are existing precursors throw the power of the people and networks and platforms into the mix and it could be genius
  • “C” can also stand for collaboration, chaos, competent, capable, …. technological advances have diminished the threshold and the gap between professionals and amateurs. You don’t have to be a geek! Worry less about tools and trends, and focus on being the best you
