An Introduction to the Sport of Cutting

  1. 1.  Reagan Lancaster currently serves as CEO of the software company SourceTap; he heads customer relations and product support. Alongside his career, Reagan Lancaster enjoys the sport of cutting and has become an expert nonprofessional cutting horse rider.
  2. 2.  The sport known as cutting takes place on horseback and involves drawing out one cow from a herd and bringing it to stand by itself in the center of the arena. Although this may sound simple, in reality it requires swift reflexes and good communication between horse and rider, as the cow tries desperately to regain its place with the herd. In competition, this whole process must take place in less than two and a half minutes.
  3. 3.  Those participating in cutting should keep several essentials in mind. First, prepare by learning to communicate well with your horse through foot signals and practicing proper posture through each of the steps, especially the stop. In the actual event, take care when approaching the herd so as not to disturb the cows. Judges at competitions require that you focus on only one cow once you make your selection, so choose carefully, and then work that cow out to the middle where your horse must match its every movement to prevent its return to the rest of the herd.
