  10. 10. MHA601: Principles of Health Care AdministrationOnline Components of Course EvaluationMultiple measures of evaluation are used in the course, allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning inmore than one way, and giving consideration to individual learning styles. Course components that will be evaluatedinclude:DiscussionsEach week students will participate in online discussions with classmates, which are related to the week’s readings. Thesediscussions replace the interactive dialogue that occurs in the traditional classroom setting. Each week, students’ initialdiscussion posts are due by 11:59 p.m. (of the time zone in which each student resides) on Day 3 (Thursday). Studentswill have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (the following Monday) to make the required minimum number of response posts toclassmates. Discussions represent 46% of the overall course grade.AssignmentsWritten AssignmentsThere is a written assignment due in weeks one through five of this course. These assignments must reflect college-levelwriting and critical thinking. Assignments represent 29% of the overall course grade.Final PaperThe final assignment for this course is a Final Paper. The purpose of the Final Paper is for you to culminate the learningachieved in the course by creating a proposal for the Renfrey Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. The Final Projectrepresents 25% of the overall course grade.Focus of the Final PaperRenfrey Memorial Hospital (RMH) is a 200 bed regional hospital located in the Midwest. It has been in existence for 32years and was named after a prominent philanthropist in the area, Mr. Gilbert H. Renfrey, who made many financialcontributions to projects in and around the community where Renfrey Memorial Hospital is located. The hospitalmaintains the only 24 hour emergency department in the area, as well as an "extended hours" urgent care clinic. Thehospital is encountering a problem with nursing staff retention. Sixty-eight percent of the nursing staff is over the age of10
  11. 11. MHA601: Principles of Health Care AdministrationOnline45, and facing retirement. The hospital commissioned a survey that revealed many of the nursing staff finds the work toophysically demanding and many are feeling physically exhausted and report emotional burn out as well. Several of thesurvey respondents report they are stressed to the breaking point caring for aging parents in addition to working atRenfrey. In the past two years, the hospital has seen an exodus of nurses. The hospital has been forced to use temporarypool nurses from an agency. This has driven up personnel costs and also resulted in decreased rankings on patientsatisfaction surveys. In addition, the nursing shortage is making it difficult to recruit replacement nurses for the staff whoplans on retiring within the next couple of years. Renfrey Memorial Hospital faces significant staffing challenges aheadas it grapples with these issues and the hospital board is very concerned. They know there must be some changes made inorder to prevent a major financial and human resources crisis in the future. For your final course project, you will create a 10 -15 page proposal for the Renfrey Memorial Hospital Board ofDirectors. In your proposal, you will:  Include an executive summary  Research and identify solutions implemented at five other hospitals in the US that were dealing with these same issues (benchmarking).  Based on your research, identify two solutions that are the most viable for Renfrey Memorial Hospital to implement within the next two years.  Present an analysis of the two solutions that you have selected in terms of at least 5 stakeholder groups involved (e.g. patients, hospital administration, accounting, H.R., marketing, third-party payers, etc.) Who is impacted? What change processes may be required? What fiscal impact would occur?  Make a recommendation with detailed justification and research support, on the single solution that you feel is best for RMH. Explain why you feel it is the best and most viable solution given the financial impact, HR issues, interpersonal dynamics of hospital personnel, cultural shift, and change management.  Utilize 10 -12 reference sources written within the last 5 years to prepare your board proposal.Writing the Final PaperThe Final Paper: 1. Must be 10 to 15 double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. 2. Must include a title page with the following: a. Title of paper11
