Colombo Courtyard The Only Art HOTEL In Sri Lanka
This unique collection of contemporary Sri Lankan art was curated by architect Sunela
Jayawardena, in collaboration with the Saskia Fernando Gallery (SFG). SFG is Colombo‟s
only gallery that focuses entirely on the local contemporary art scene, staging exhibitions of
established and emerging artists locally and in art capitals such as London, Singapore and
Dubai. The collection for Colombo Courtyard was curated in keeping with the hotel‟s
sustainable architecture theme. Artist Prageeth Manohansa was commissioned to complete
his second largest sculpture to-date constructed entirely out of scrap metal. Mika
Tennekoon‟s crow paintings are part of the series exhibited in a two man show with the
sculptor and maintain the theme of Colombo nature, as requested by the architect. Other
works featured within the space all focus on Sri Lankan nature, man and beast as a
representation of the attention paid to recycled art and design for Colombo Courtyard.
Sunela Jayawardena, as an Environmental Designer, she strives to bring sustainability into
my work in every context.
Accordingly, the remit for renovation and amalgamation of multi – style urban structures
seemed to naturally progress to the theme of Recycling.
Using Recycling as an overall theme, she has attempted to showcase the wide range of
possible applications and allowed it to influence both architectural and interior design.
Machine parts that are not normally used for interior decoration have been widely used.
Further as contextual relevance is a vital component of Environmental Design, the
characteristics of the city of Colombo were displayed in the contemporary City series of
photos and the art & sculptural theme of the „Colombo Crows‟.
Bicycle part tree
The 4storey stairwell required a sculpture that would extend the space of the Main Lobby by
creating a line of sight from the entrance through the total height of the building. By
commissioning a sculpture of recycled metal, a Tree Representing the environmental value,
the recycled metal as the material of choice and the crows on the tree successfully
encapsulated the main components of the design philosophy.

Courtyard‟s Midweek Jazz
July 8, 2013 Posted in Loft Lounge Bar No comments
Colombo Courtyard the hidden gem set in a cozy corner of the city which offers you a
comfortable setting with attention to the natural environment brings about another dimension
to Colombo nightlife with their „Midweek Jazz‟, a novel midweek night out for city
Replay ft. Ray Gomes, Dilukshi Sirimanna, Revel Crake and Jude Theagarajah, the Jazz
Band who plays at the Loft-Lounge Bar at the Colombo Courtyard hotel has „Midweek Jazz‟
every Wednesday from 7.00 pm onwards, introducing the flavor of traditional Jazz culture
which is not unfamiliar to Colombo Jazz enthusiasts.
Abeer Thapar, Director of Colombo Courtyard says; “Jazz nights at the Loft Lounge Bar
has created an interest level amongst their customers, bringing them out in the middle of the
week for an entertaining session”.
“Midweek night outs are different from Friday night outs. People go out in the night after
work and they have to go back to work the next morning. So, midweek night outs do not drag
on and on. And there should be some space for conversation, relaxation and good
entertainment. Jazz music played at our Loft Lounge Bar creates the perfect atmosphere for a
midweek night out,” Thapar explains.
How does Jazz fit into midweek night outs? That is an interesting question. It is not just a
form of music, but a culture and a distinctive tradition. To play Jazz is to contribute to world
history, because it stems from the slavery experience of Afro-Americans in the early part of
century. To be a Jazz artist one has to become a part of that lineage. Hence, it is
different from pop, rock or rock n roll.
“One might say that Jazz is not the buzz-word in the music industry nowadays. It has a
relatively small audience compared to pop. That also is a unique characteristic of Jazz. It is,
so to say, the grandfather of modern forms of music such as pop and hip-hop,” says Dilukshi
Sirimanna, singer and keyboard player of the Jazz band „Replay‟ who performs at Colombo
However Dilukshi mentions, it is not very loud and it creates a nice ambiance for people,
without music disturbing the conversation. “It perfectly fits into a hang-out place of this
nature. One can even have a business-like meeting while listening to Jazz music. At the same
time, true music lovers can listen to the music serenely while enjoying the nice atmosphere”,
she adds. Her band includes three other members namely Dilukshi Sirimanna, Revel Crake,
Jude Theagarajah and Ray Gomes.
Most important aspect of Jazz is its quality of being multi-dimensional. Most genres of music
nowadays are not nearly as multidimensional as Jazz. This poses a serious challenge to
modern Jazz artists. That is to make this a subtle and multi-dimensional form of music
palatable to the “Modern Audience”.
Replay, who plays at the Loft Lounge Bar of Colombo Courtyard, has taken up this challenge
Dilukshi also mentions that it is amazing to see the young generation of Sri Lankan music
lovers embrace Jazz music. “Contrary to the notion that Jazz music is not appealing to
modern youth, we have received good feedback from young music lovers. They are fully
aware of various kinds of Jazz and because of that we also do various kinds of
„blends‟. Sometimes they range from traditional Jazz songs to Jazzy pop songs”.
The Loft Lounge Bar, on the other hand, is not just another bar. The unique selling point of
the Loft Lounge Bar, quite interestingly, is its cocktail menu. Abeer Thapar describes the
Loft Lounge Bar as the best „Cocktail Bar‟ in town as a wide range of Cocktails including
Sake Cocktails are on the cocktail menu which also fits into the concept of midweek night
outs coupled with Jazz music”.
What good hotels offer is not just food or comfort or music. They offer an „experience‟. The
Hotel industry, in other words, is no longer merely that but, an „Experience Industry‟. It is
the „experience‟ that creates a value in the market. Colombo Courtyard has clearly
understood this formula and with their „Midweek Jazz‟, cocktails and great ambiance, have
changed the weekly night life experience of the city.
