There has been a major challenge of security deficit and increase in the level of violence in Afghanistan in 2015, thus a well thought of security strategy is necessary. This set of two slides outlines the same.

  1. 1. Key Areas of Focus Internal Factors
  2. 2.  Greater political unity – central and provincial leaders.  Concentrate on clearance of major provinces – Nangarhar, Kunar, Helmand, Badakshan, Ghazni, Zabul and others which emerge as hot spots in 2016.  Exploit split in Taliban, emergence of Daesh.  Focus on security of Kabul – Kandahar Highway.  Improve quality of support being provided by Resolute Support Mission – particularly intelligence assessment, fire including air support and operational planning.  Afghanistan National Defence and Security Forces – Focus on fighting strength of units, do not accept deficiencies
  3. 3.  Extend terms of service of Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP) personnel and incentivise re-enlistment.  Improve coordination of disparate forces, ANA, ANP, Afghan Local Police, local militias where approved by the government particularly at the grass roots.  Disband militias which are not approved by the central government in Kabul.  Improve border security on Afghan Pakistan border.
