Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde -we don’t know what the story is about! <ul><li>Reading done since March, 2009 </li></ul><ul><li>Rely mostly on the teacher to be a storyteller </li></ul><ul><li>Setting of the novel-classic, unfamiliar to the Ss </li></ul><ul><li>Vocabulary – difficult to comprehend </li></ul><ul><li>Plain lazy! </li></ul>

They don’t understand, therefore… <ul><li>They only answer based on the novel ‘The Phantom of The Opera” </li></ul><ul><li>They do not really answer the question asked. </li></ul><ul><li>Their answers lack elaborations </li></ul><ul><ul><li>No evidence from the text </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>No own opinion-in certain questions </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Answer a) Based on novel Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde the theme did I get is friendship. </li></ul><ul><li>Answer b) Based on the novel that I have chosen Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-R.L. Stevenson. The theme that I like is a friendship. The really good friend that I found in the novel is Mr Utterson. He is good to Dr Jekyll. Mr Utterson also keep a letter from Dr Jekyll to Dr Lanyon. </li></ul>Before
  5. 5. <ul><li>Answer #1 : Based on the novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde the theme did I get is friendship. Dr Jekyll have many good friends like Mr Utterson, Dr Lanyon. Mr Utterson keep his secret from anyone to know that he become Mr Hyde. Dr Lanyon keep his letter and never give anyone to read. They are friendship. </li></ul>After
  6. 6. <ul><li>Answer #2 : B ased on the novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R.L. Stevenson, I found the theme of friendship. Mr Utterson is a really good friend I found in the novel. For examples, he did not tell anyone that Dr Jekyll changed to Mr Hyde in the lab. Besides that, Mr Utterson also keeps Dr Jekyll a secret which is Dr Jekyll is also Mr Hyde. He is keep friendship when he did not open a letter that he got from another friend Dr Lanyon. </li></ul>

Detecting the issue: <ul><li>Students read (halfway, full text or maybe a few chapters) but they fail to grasp the meaning of the vocabulary used : e.g.: In Chapter 2-The Signature </li></ul><ul><li>“ He looked at his prisoner, who was very conscious of that circle of hate, and yet who stood there, filled with a kind of black scorn–” (P.15) </li></ul><ul><li>In Chapter 3-Blackmail House </li></ul><ul><li>“ It chanced on one of these excursions that their way led them into a rather dismal part of town, in which there stood one street of clean and neat little houses” (P.24) </li></ul>

The Remedy: <ul><li>Group work : - assigned them to be in groups of 3 to 4 </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Each group reads 2 chapters </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Think of own device to visualize the events etc. </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Prepare for presentation </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Class discussion : - </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Each group presents their work </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Aids: Mind-map, charts, notes </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Teacher’s guide : - </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Reinforce and add to certain areas </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Encourage them to write about any area of their understanding pertaining to the novel. </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul>
