  7. 7. RADICIGROUP FOR SUSTAINABILITY- The LOGOProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi …. It represents RadiciGroup’s roots into sustainability…The tree emphasizes the importance of environmental protection andthe use of “green energy” from renewable sources (hydroelectericplants and co-generation plants)….MOST of them RECS certified by qRADICIGROUP’s ENERGY PARTNER GEOGREENTo learn more: www.geogreen.it - The restyling of the recycling logo suggests the Group’s committment to a rational use of resources
  8. 8. RADICIGROUP FOR SUSTAINABILITY- the PROJECT Progetto Codice Etico Obiettivi The guidelines of Sustainable Development for RadiciGroup (ISO 26000) :1) Organizational Models: ISO 14000, OHSAS 18000, SA 80002) Product Certifications (mandatory and voluntary) and R&D :- REACH- LCA on all the main PA-BASED products- All RG Products (esp. recycled – products) made withrenewable sources)3) the Kyoto Protocol to 2020: 20/20/20 - Saving-Renewables-Emission cut and a + 20% in Recycling4) Sustainability as the key to corporategovernance: a new APPROACH and a GRI basedreport , certified by an External Organization

  11. 11. 2- Product Certifications - REACH Progetto Codice Etico Obiettivi REACH is the European Community Regulation on Chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006 – European Community Law). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. Radici Chimica has: -- Registered all its main products -- Become a Member of the ADIPIC ACID Consortiumwith the task of studying and improving legislation on chemicals -- Become the “advisor” to all the other RADICIGROUP Companies as for REACH compliance

  15. 15. 4 - the GRI project for a New SustainabilityProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi Approach : focus on Corporate GovernanceThe Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a network-basedorganization that pioneered the world’s most widely usedsustainability reporting framework. GRI is committed to theFramework’s continuous improvement and applicationworldwide. GRI’s core goals include the mainstreaming of disclosure on environmental, social and governance performance. To learn more: www.globalreporting.org/Home

  18. 18. 4 - our LCA PROJECTProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi is an assessment of the environmental effects a product or An LCA service has during its lifetime. APPLIED TO OUR MAIN PA6 & PA66 Products, from Polymers to Plastics and Fibres GLOBAL GROSS WARMING ENERGY POTENTIAL100 REQUIREMENT (Kg CO2 eq.) (MJ eq./Kg) APPLIED TO THE PA PRODUCTION CHAIN OF RADICIGROUP FOR A GLOBAL LCA
  19. 19. 4 - our LCA PROJECT: why we focus on nylon ? Progetto Codice Etico Obiettivi Not only because it is our core business and we love it .... but, still today, it is a top performer material! The era of polyamide began in the 1930s with the research of Carothers in the USA. Carothers discovered polyamide 66.At the same time, PaulSchlack was polymerizingcaprolactamto produce polyamide 6 inGermany.In 1939 the first factory for the productionof polyamide 66 was built in Delaware.By October 1939, the first nylon stockingswere sold. “As strong as steel, as fine as a spider’s web, yet more elastic than all common natural fibers”
  20. 20. 4 - PA66, the first step of our LCA PROJECTProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi Nylon, after decades of success, comes under Todayscrutiny for its significant impact on the environment! GER 138 MJ/kg (From: Plastics Europe Eco-profiles report by I. Boustead 2005)
  21. 21. 4 - PA66, the first step of our LCA PROJECTProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi
  22. 22. 4 - PA66, the first step of our LCA PROJECTProgetto Codice Etico The PA66 chainObiettivi has been investigated: AA HMDA HOOC-(CH2)4- + H2N-(CH2)6- COOH NH2 = Polyamide 66 (Nylon) HOOC-(CH2)4-CONH-(CH2)6-NH2 + H2O PA66 BCF yarn Radifloor®
  23. 23. 4 - The Methodology of our LCA PROJECT Progetto Codice Etico The following principles Obiettivi have been adopted: ISO14040 • Principles and framework • Goal and scope definition ISO14041 • Inventory analysis ISO14042 • Life cycle impact assessment ISO14043 • InterpretationThe SimaPro 7 LCA Software has been selected.Input data source: from Plastics Europe.
  24. 24. 4 - PA66 from cradle to gate, our LCA results Progetto Codice Etico Obiettivi AA HMDA HOOC-(CH2)4- + H2N-(CH2)6- COOH NH2 =GER = 128 Polyamide 66 (Nylon)MJ/KgGWP = 8,53Kg CO2 eq HOOC-(CH2)4-CONH-(CH2)6-NH2 + H2O GER = 157 MJ/Kg PA66 BCF yarn GWP = 9,75 Radifloor® Kg CO2 eq
  25. 25. 5 - PA66, recycling down the value chainProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi GER = 29 GER = 16,5 MJ/Kg MJ/Kg GWP = 1,22 GWP = 1,06 Kg CO2 eq Kg CO2 eq Post Ind. & Post Consumer Waste - 43%
  26. 26. 5 - PA66, recycling down the value chainProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi What is bad - what is good ? Both solutions are technically feasible but:  The spinning process requires more energy and the CO2 eq. emissions are higher.  The recycled-yarns have some limitations on: Recycled content Dyebility Mechanical performances  The plastics solution requires less energy and emits less CO2 eq.  The recycled plastics maintain: Good mechanical performances Good “moldability”  The recycled content could be Up to 100%
  27. 27. 6 - ConclusionsProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi The LCA project has just started and it will continuewith the analysis of others PA6 & PA66-based productsin the fields of: Textile yarns Carpet yarns Industrial yarns (PA66) Staple Fibers (PA6) Our LCA (from Cradle to Gate) will be available toour Customers for environmental analysis, EPDcalculations, etc. We do provide a service tocustomers! The PA66 polymer, produced by RADICIGROUP isperforming (GER and GWP) better than theEco Profile published by Plastics Europe.
  28. 28. 6 - ConclusionsProgetto Codice EticoObiettivi To recycle nylon wastes into plastics is a more efficient way to: Reduce energy needs. Maintain a good value added on products. Maintain a good balance on energy requirements and performances with other polymers: GER/Tensile strength ratio (MJ/Mpa) The data are obtained comparing polymer PA66 GER by RADICICHIMICA with other polymer GER data published by Plastics Europe Eco Profiles and divided with the respective value of tensile strength ( from CES: Cambridge Engineering Selector database)
