Our Privileges

  1. 1. Philippians 2:1-11
  2. 2. 2 IF .… THEN …. ELSE ….
  3. 3. 3 IF you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, IF his love has made any difference in your life, IF being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, IF you have a heart, IF you care - THEN do me a favour: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. Philippians 2:1-4
  4. 4. 4 IF .… THEN …. ELSE …. IF …. • Got anything from Christ? • His loved changed you? • Value me as your bro./sis.? • Your heart sympathetic? • You care?
  5. 5. 5 IF .… THEN …. ELSE …. THEN …. • Agree with each other • Love one other • One heart, mind, purpose • Help others get ahead
  6. 6. 6 IF .… THEN …. ELSE …. ELSE …. • N/A • No choice but to love! “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
  7. 7. Counter-cultural • Against world teaching • Demand our rights • Competition
  8. 8. Counter-cultural • Race • Press
  9. 9. 9 Self-sacrifice • Love one another • Your interests ahead of mine • Me advancing you
  10. 10. 10 Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death – and the worst kind of death at that – a crucifixion. Philippians 2:5-8
  11. 11. 11 Humility • Learn from Jesus • Lay aside our privileges • Help others have a go • NOT false humility: “serve” by doing everything
  12. 12. 12 Obedience • Follow someone/something • Jesus: o Chose to lay aside privileges and obey Father o Lived a selfless, obedient life o Died a selfless, obedient death
  13. 13. 13 Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honoured him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth – even those long ago dead and buried – will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honour of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
  14. 14. 14 God’s favor Obedience unlocks God’s favor To Jesus Christ: • All creation bow to Jesus To us: • Nations will come to us Result: • God the Father is glorified
  15. 15. 15 So what ….??  How can I: o Cheer another believer up? o Love enough to want to help them?  What privileges do I need to forgo?  Obstacles to obeying Father’s voice?  “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35
