UTPT 2019 LitEnt Quiz Round 6 - ACW dries

  1. 1. Dries (Anti-Clockwise) Round
  2. 2. Rules Rules • The usual +10/0 on direct • Pounce: +10/-5, one pounce per team per question. • Bangalore bounce • Parts will be applicable as per QM’s discretion. • No conservation of points. • 10 Questions in the set.
  3. 3. 1) Shown in the following slide is a photoshopped image of Sarah Paulson, who plays the titular character of an upcoming Netflix show X (eponymous to the character played by her) The show will chronicle her journey and evolution from her profession to her turning into a “full-fledged monster”, and will track her murderous progression through the mental health care system. ID X, a very (un)popular character in the world of literature. Picture follows.
  4. 4. 1)
  5. 5. SAFETY SLIDE
  6. 6. ANSWER Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
  7. 7. 2) __________ is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock that emerged in the United Kingdom in the late 1980s. It is characterised by its ethereal-sounding mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and overwhelming volume. It(blank) was coined by the British music press to ridicule the stage presence of a wave of neo-psychedelic groups who stood still during live performances in a detached, introspective, non-confrontational state with their heads down, obviously due to them looking at the readouts on their effects pedals. My Blood Valentine, Slowdive and Lush were some notable bands of this genre. FITB, pictures follow.
  8. 8. 2)
  9. 9. SAFETY SLIDE
  10. 10. ANSWER Shoegaze
  11. 11. 3) Trypophobia is a proposed phobia — intense, irrational fear or anxiety — of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes, circles, or bumps. Trypophobia can actually be debilitating; reactions depend on the individual and range in intensity, but can include throwing up, crying, shaking all over, and intense itching or scratching. Even before the release of this movie, trypophobics were getting triggered about what they were seeing on the screen. The character supposedly did this to his body to symbolize every kill he had made. Which movie, which is making all the headlines, and which character?
  12. 12. SAFETY SLIDE
  13. 13. ANSWER Killmonger from Black Panther
  14. 14. 4) Shown in the next slide are shots from the famous satire show Family Guy. Seth McFarlane intentionally brought certain additional characters into the scene so as to circumvent a rule in American broadcast television that could get shows banned for breaking them. What is this rule that Seth is trying to work his way around? Pictures follow.
  15. 15. 4)
  16. 16. SAFETY SLIDE
  17. 17. ANSWER Workaround for swearing in the name of ‘Jesus’/’God’
  18. 18. 5) In an article by the Rolling Stone which talked about the craziest stories of singer Rick James, one such story was as follows: A certain artist known for his quirkiness said that he was mad about the way James looked. The artist then spent some time and drew James' picture on a napkin. However, James smoked a joint and went for a swim in his shorts, which contained the portrait. James totally forgot about it and thus it became an inky blob. This story was appropriately titled after a famous artwork by the artist. ID the title of the article.
  19. 19. SAFETY SLIDE
  20. 20. ANSWER Persistence of Memory by Dali
  21. 21. 6) This is a video of the song “Judith” by the rock band, A Perfect Circle. Watch the video closely, and ID the director of this video, who employs his/her cinematic tricks: dark smoky lighting, obscuring of faces, extensive film scratching, and frame manipulation.
  22. 22. SAFETY SLIDE
  23. 23. ANSWER David Fincher
  24. 24. 7) China's rehab centers are no strangers to using technology to treat addiction: Shanghai drug rehab facilities are trialing a combination of VR, eye tracking and skin sensors to aid in recovery. Recovering addicts have to look at images and video illustrating the effects of drugs, and the eye monitoring can help determine their reactions. Since patients can't look away from the unpleasant imagery without their overseers knowing, this has been called a gentler version of another well- known process X. ID X.
  25. 25. SAFETY SLIDE
  26. 26. ANSWER Ludovico Technique from A Clockwork Orange
  27. 27. 8) Earlier travels had exposed the painter to victims of insanity and plague, and while researching the ________, his effort to be historically accurate and realistic led to an obsession with the stiffness of corpses. To achieve the most authentic rendering, he made sketches of bodies in the morgue of the Hospital Beaujon, studied the faces of dying hospital patients, brought severed limbs back to his studio to study their decay, and for a fortnight drew a severed head, borrowed from a lunatic asylum and stored on his studio roof. These were the preparations by X to create what? (Please be as specific as possible)
  28. 28. SAFETY SLIDE
  29. 29. ANSWER The Raft of Medusa by Theodore Gericault
  30. 30. 9) From the 1999 film Dogma starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, among others. Shown here is the opening scene of the movie that features Damon’s character in conversation with a nun about his atheism and references a famous poem ID the poem.
  31. 31. SAFETY SLIDE
  32. 32. ANSWER Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Caroll
  33. 33. 10) In the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, Act III-Scene 1 features a soliloquy by Mark Antony, who is alone with Julius Caesar's body. Shortly after the latter’s assassination he incites the crowd at Caesar's funeral to rise up against the assassins: “Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the ____ __ ____; That this foul deed shall smell above the earth” In a literal reading, the blanks refer to certain animals, trained for warfare; ‘havoc’ is the military order permitting the seizure of spoil after a victory. The blanked phrase in modern English is used to refer to mercenaries, and hence is the name of a famous military novel of the past century. FITB, and ID the author.
  34. 34. SAFETY SLIDE
  35. 35. ANSWER Dogs of War by Frederick Forsyth
  36. 36. 11) Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an adventure RPG game developed by Ninja Theories that is self described as an “independent AAA game”. The studio decided to do something that had never been attempted before for a 3 dimensional AAA/III game. The reasons for this was because they had only one camera to work with and they wanted the players to feel like an "an observer, like a presence watching Senua throughout" The only other game to have utilised such a technique completely is God of War (2018), which wanted to give players smooth and seamless experience with less hassles. What is unique about these 2 games?
  37. 37. SAFETY SLIDE
  38. 38. ANSWER The game was completed in one shot. God of War
