  4. 4. <ul><li>We’re asking Solihull MBC to commit to reduce CO2 in our borough by at least 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Why 40%? </li></ul><ul><li>Climate Change Committee and Tyndall Centre recommend the need to cut emissions by 40% by 2020 in order to avoid runaway climate change </li></ul><ul><li>Is anyone else doing this? </li></ul><ul><li>14 authorities have committed to reduce CO2 in their areas by at least 40% by 2020 </li></ul>What are we asking for?

What are others committing to? <ul><li>Council CO2 reduction target </li></ul><ul><li>Birmingham 60% by 2026 </li></ul><ul><li>Bristol 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Durham County 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Haringey 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Harrogate 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Harrow 40% by 2020, 60% by 2025 </li></ul><ul><li>Islington 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Leeds 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>London 60% by 2025 </li></ul><ul><li>Manchester 41% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Oxford 25% by 2010/11 , and 3% year on year thereafter – equivalent to just under 43% by 2020. </li></ul><ul><li>Plymouth 60% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Suffolk 40% by 2020 </li></ul><ul><li>Wirral 60% from 2007 levels by 2025 </li></ul>

What is Solihull like in environmental terms? <ul><li>Within the local authority there are lots of positive things happening </li></ul><ul><li>They have an internal CO2 reduction target to achieve by 2013 </li></ul><ul><li>They have signed up to 10:10 </li></ul><ul><li>What is the current level of CO2 emissions in the borough? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>We don’t know! </li></ul></ul>

  8. 8. <ul><li>We need to measure the CO2 emissions on a borough wide basis. </li></ul><ul><li>This would involve signing up to national indicator NI186, per capita emissions in the LA area. </li></ul><ul><li>This would give us a start point and allow us to set targets for reduction </li></ul><ul><li>Do other partners have CO2 reduction targets? </li></ul>So, first things first…..

So, just to reiterate…. <ul><ul><li>Commit to carbon emission cuts in Solihull of at least 40% by 2020 – and produce an action plan detailing how we’re going to do it. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Get started now with measures such as making homes more energy efficient, retrofitting renewable energy, creating local energy supplies and going green on transport </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Support our campaign for more money and less hassle so local authorities can achieve this </li></ul></ul>
