Consumers areincreasinglyexpectingtheir productstobemadeanddistributedethically withoutnegativelyimpactingtheenvironment, andbynotdepletingnaturalresources.Theyare alsoconcernedaboutfoodwasteandplastic packaging.Theywanttoseeconsumer-facing- companiesexhibitsustainablepracticesintheir businesseslikeconcerningthemselveswith humanrights,limitingtheircarbonemissionsand reducingtheiruseofnon-renewableenergyand water.

Customers are looking for: » Sustainable products that are biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and ethically sourced » Manufacturing processes that strive for zero waste and impact the environment minimally while increasing health and safety numbers » Logistics processes that optimize loads to reduce mileage, emissions, and carbon footprint » Assets that are designed and operate in an energy- efficient manner and are safe for the environment and workforce » Adherence to environmental and government regulations and standards such as the initiatives outlined in both the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 5
  6. 6. BEST FOR You O R G A N I C S C O M P A N Y Some of the global fast-moving- consumer-goods (FMCG) companies that are regarded as leaders in sustainable supply chain management are Coca Cola, Nestle, Proctor and Gamble, Unilever and Nike. 6

BEST FOR You O R G A N I C S C O M P A N Y » Unilever in February announced that it had reached an “industry-leading” achievement of eliminating non- hazardous waste to landfill at more than 600 of its manufacturing, office and warehouse sites in 70 countries (though it did not say what percentage of sites this represented) while Nestlé, which had a 2015 goal of zero waste at 10% of factories, achieved this at 22% of sites. » At Unilever sites in Egypt, trash is sent to local entrepreneurs, who sort for recycling and use plastics in upcycled fishermen’s bags; in Africa some waste is turned into low-cost building materials; in Ivory Coast waste fires cement kilns. Unilever’s ultimate goal is a “zero-waste value chain” and it is collaborating with the Closed Loop initiative to build better recycling facilities as well as with non-profit 2degrees to share its best practice with other companies. 7 Unilever,Nestle,Coca-cola

BEST FOR You O R G A N I C S C O M P A N Y » Coca-Cola views three of its recent actions as breakthrough in terms of sustainability leadership, says communications director Serena Levy. “Three actions we view [as] having great potential well into the future are our water replenish work, 5by20 programme, and our PlantBottle innovation.” The 5by20 initiative, which has a goal of empowering 5 million women entrepreneurs across the value chain by 2020, has already reached 1.2 million women. » Nestle’s annual purchases of cocoa are in excess of 300,000 tonnes. The company only uses sustainably sourced cocoa from suppliers accredited by independent third parties to make its KitKat bars. Nestle’s Cocoa Plan operates across three key pillars: better farming practices, better lives of employees and their communities and better quality cocoa. 8

BEST FOR You O R G A N I C S C O M P A N Y » As of 2018, 86% of P&G packages are considered recyclable » 2020 goal: Ensure 90% of product packaging is recyclable » 100% renewable electricity and cut GHG emissions in half at P&G sites by 2030 » Collaborate with numerous organizations to increase the global area of certified forests, while strengthening certification systems. » Advance recycling solutions for Absorbent Hygiene Products(pampers) P&G 9

BEST FOR You O R G A N I C S C O M P A N Y » Today, Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation facilities divert more than 95% of manufacturing waste from landfills — that’s 51 million pounds of materials (the equivalent of nearly 10 Olympic-size swimming pools) from May 2016 to 2017 alone. » All Air sole innovations designed since 2008 are composed of at least 50% recycled manufacturing waste. 10 NikeSustainability » The new Nike Air Max 270 Air sole boasts one of the largest, tallest, and most visible cushioning systems to date and contains more than 70% recycled manufacturing waste. » The VaporMax Air sole, which contains more than 75% recycled material, has allowed Nike to remove the need for a foam mid-sole. Yarn, soles and basketball courts are a few examples of the many products Nike creates by transforming plastic bottles, manufacturing scraps and used product into new materials emblematic of Nike’s 30-year commitment to holistic sustainability, which is detailed in the latest Sustainable Business Report. In fact, 75 percent of all Nike shoes and apparel now contain some recycled material.
