  2. 2.  A family of toothed whales.  Includes about 34 species.  They are between 2 and 9 meters long.  The coloration of the skin is in shades of gray (lighter on the belly and darker on the back), combined with lines and spots.  Strict carnivores.
  3. 3.  Large head  Long snout  Single blowhole on top of the head.  The caudal fin is used for propulsion.  Pectoral fins are used for the direction of swimming.
  4. 4. They are among the most intelligent species on the planet. They are relatively close to the coast and often interact with humans. They use the sounds, dances and jumps to communicate, navigate and reach their food.
  5. 5. HUMAN THREATS Environmental pollution of the oceans, seas and rivers is a concern. Pesticides, heavy metals, plastics and other industrial and agricultural wastes, can cause reduced dolphin populations. Injuries or deaths caused by ship strikes are also common. Various fishing methods kill dolphins being caught in the nets. In some parts of the world, such as Taiji (Japan) and the Faroe Islands, dolphins are traditionally considered as food.
