Whether it's the long fasting hours, the late night rituals, or simply the change in daily habits and routines, many Muslim employees struggle to manage their energy levels & performance during the holy month. A Regional Challenge Ramadan seems to have developed a reputation in the MENA region for reduced working hours and productivity. According to Ahmed Bin Khalaf Al Mazroui, vice chairman of the United Arab Emirates Contractors’ Association, “the fact is that productivity of fasting Muslims during Ramadan slows down” whilst Radio Netherlands Worldwide states that “productivity in the Muslim world drops and the civil service comes to a virtual standstill.” According to economic analysts, productivity drops by about 50 per cent in both the public and private sectors during Ramadan. Interviews conducted by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) of employees in Dubai uncovered quotes that productivity dropped by at least 20 per cent and sometimes even twice this ratio.
  3. 3. Our Ramadan Study This study was featured on CNN, BBC, GulfNews, and other national and international news outlets. In 2011, we conducted an extensive study in partnership with Dinar Standard, a New York based research and advisory firm, to study the impact of Ramadan on employee productivity. The report is based on primary and secondary research and provides the following two key insights: 1. There's a sizable percentage (26%) of OIC based Muslim professionals who believed that their company’s productivity does unnecessarily suffer during Ramadan. 2. Over three quarters of the Muslim professionals in the survey would like to keep their work productivity the same.
