World Languages
Language is one of the most defining characteristics of culture. It reflects what people
value and the way they understand the world. It also reveals how certain groups of
people may have had common roots at some point in history. For example, English and
German are two very diferent languages, but both are part of the same Indo-European
language Family. This means that these two languages share certain characteristics that
suggest they have evolved from common ancestor language.
About 5,000 languages are spoken in the world today, but experts think many may
become extinct as more people become involved in global trade, communications, and
travel.
