The 4 important color models for presentation design

The importance of color models for presentation design Knowing the basics of different color models is important for when you create slide as they explain how colors are defined for use in slide decks. When creating slides you need to know how to define RGB colors, how to utilize the HSL values to adjust colors to your advantage and how brand CMYK values and web HEX values relates to the colors you need to use in PowerPoint and how to "translate" them for use in PowerPoint.

  3. A color can be pure, have a lightness/darkness, and have a intensity.
  4. HUE SATURATION The pure color The intensity of a hue (also called chroma)*. The lightness (added white) or darkness (added black) of a hue. VALUE (*when a hue is most intense it is fully saturated and when it is more dull/muted it is less saturated).
  5. The color of light behaves differently than the color of pigment.

  13. The RGB color model (Red-Green-Blue) If you mix the three colors you get white. If you delete all colors you get black. Based on the additive mixture of three monochromatic lights - red, green and blue - and the ability to create all other colors by combining these colors. Red Green Blue
  14. RGB colors are composed of combinations of portions of red, green and blue light beams that goes straight from a screen into your eyes.
  15. How to create colors with RGB? R: 255 0 0 0 G: 0 255 0 0 B: 0 0 255 0 Combine parts of the three primary colors red, green and blue. Each of the primary colors can have a value in the range from 0 to 255.

  19. A subtractive model using blue (cyan), red (magneta) & to mix all colors and adds black (key) as a fourth color. MAGNETA CYANYELLOW The CMYK color model (Cyan-Magneta- ellow-Key) (Black is also called the “key color”)
  20. CM K colors are used specifically for printed material and physical media and are created by combinations of the primary colors, like blending colors on white paper.
  21. How to create colors with CMYK? C: 100 0 0 0 0 M: 0 100 0 0 0 Y: 0 0 100 0 0 K: 0 0 0 100 0 Combine values of the primary colors cyan, magenta, – and black. Each of the colors are calculated in percentages – from 0 to 100%.

  25. The HSL color model (Hue, Saturation Luminosity) A subset of the RGB model that express the colors in terms of hue, saturation and luminosity. (*The HSL model differs from the HSB/HSV model used in tools like Photoshop.) SATURATION LUMINOSITY HUE
  26. HSL tries to bridge the RGB color model, understood by computers, to mix colors more like humans do.
  27. LUMINOSITY L= 000 L= 255L= 128 An original hue have a luminosity value of 128. When you decrease this value (minimum is 000) the color becomes darker (shade). When you increase this value (maximum is 255) the colors becomes brighter (tint). H: 0 S: 255 L: 128 (as used in the HSL model used in PowerPoint)

S = 000 S = 255 L= 000 L= 255L= 128 When saturation is decreased (minimum is 000) the color is almost gone and it becomes desaturated/neutralized) SATURATION An original hue is fully saturated/vibrant and have a saturation level of 255 (maximum). H: 0 S: 255 L: 128 (as used in the HSL model used in PowerPoint)
  29. The pure color, hue, can be calculated by giving it a number between 0 to 255 where pure red has a hue of 0. H= 0 H= 213H= 170H= 127H= 85 HUE If you change just the hue value, the new hue will have the same saturation and luminosity values as the original color. H: 0 S: 255 L: 128 (as used in the HSL model used in PowerPoint)
  30. How to create colors with HSL*? H: 0 85 170 170 S: 255 255 255 0 L: 128 128 128 0 Combine values of a color’s hue, saturation and luminosity. Each of the three parts can have a value in the range from 0 to 255. (*as used in PowerPoint)

  32. PowerPoint has the HSL model built in to adjust colors.
  33. Using the HSL model and adjusting hue, saturation and luminosity, you can fix bad tints/shade colors in PowerPoint. ORIGINAL ADJUSTED

  35. The HEX color model (HEXadecimal) An extension of the RGB model but using hexadecimal numbers to define colors for HTML code. FF0000 00FF00 0000FF
  36. HEX is used specifically for online material and websites and use combinations of the primary colors similar to RGB.
  37. How to create colors with HEX? #FF 00 00 #00 FF 00 #00 00 FF #00 00 00 FF 00 00 R G B RED Combine parts of the three primary colors red, green and blue. Each of the primary colors can have a value in the range 00 (minimum) to FF (maximum) in hexadecimals.
