The DIKW (Data Information Knowledge Wisdom) continuum is one of the profound theories in Knowledge Management. Originally developed by systems theorist Russell Ackoff and further modified by Gene Bellinger et. al., this theory categorizes human mind into five categories - Data, Information, Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom. Data is an acumulation of facts which when seen alone does not have meaning. Information is meaningful interpretation of data. Knowledge is the application of the gathered information. Understanding is the action one takes to synthesize new knowledge by building upon the knowledge held till now. Wisdom is the transition that comes after an in detail and complete understanding of knowledge.
