5. Reality
■ People were completely oblivious of
the invisible lethal radiation that they
are being exposed to.
■ 30 hours later 43,000 people were
evacuated.
■ Transparency: There were no official
reports outside soviet unions. It took
three days for the world to know. By
now the whole of Europe was at risk
of contamination as the plant was still
burning.
■ To protect the fire and seal reactor
no.4 to prevent any more radiation
spilling out
7. Claims
■ Reports claiming several inaccuracies and
thoughts over violation of safety regulations along
with the flawed design of the reactors used at
Chernobyl.
■ After the explosion the authorities were slow to
react and acknowledge the dangers posed by this
accident.
■ Post- Crisis : New safety Rules rules in nuclear
energy.
■ It was the biggest nuclear disaster in history and
we can only hope that we can say that forever.
Editor's Notes
By 1983, 4 nuclear reactors are built and they are powering 10% of Ukraine's electricity
Blame narrative, victim narrative, hero narrative.
On 26, April. 1986 workers at the nuclear plant are carrying out the nuclear test on the reactor number 4.
worker could feel the ground trembling beneath them, they knew something bad was coming and seconds later. First explosion occurs followed by the second more powerful explosion releasing the deadly radioactive vapors into the air.
They Deny of any radiation being leaked out and told higher class officials, everything was under control.
2. But when they actually measured the level of radiation in that area, The figures were shocking, Radio activity reading was measured in Roentgen normal atmospheric level was 12 millions of a reontgen, but that day it was 200,000 of a ronjons, by evening it was 600,000 times higher.
gorbhachev hurriedly created a governmental commission including country’s top experts in nuclear enegry. ---Mortification
Because they have never seen such a level of radiactivity before. No body was prepared for a crisis like this.
1.Pilots report in to fly helicopters above the reactor and dropped thousands of tones of sand clay and neutron absorbing boron onto the blaze to smuther the flame and neutralize the radiation.
2. life carried on as normal- children went to school and residents went to work. they were told they will be returning in a few days but that never happened. were known as the first atomic refugees.
18 miles area around the plant was closed .
Flames were bought under some control but heat had not and it was causing the base of the reactor to crack.
If the radio active magma made contact with the pool of water, it would have caused a massive steam explosion throwing out more radioactive material into the air. So to drain this water and prevent this explosion, three brave plant workers volunteer to accept the risk of draining the water. They went underneath, equipped with wetsuits and a faulty lamp.
10 X more powerfull than herroshima which would have wiped out half of europe.
Took 8 months to completely seal the 4th reactor
1000 miles radius to be uninhabitable to humans for next hundred years
flawed design caused a sudden power surge and an emergency shutdown was implemented. 30 plant workers by radiation related deaths and 4 pilot crashed trying to contained the fire at the plantTook 8 months to completely seal the 4th reactor
