The document summarizes research conducted on railway services in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. It collected data through surveys of 150 passengers at Moratuwa station about travel patterns, costs, and satisfaction levels. It found that most passengers are commuting for work from ages 35-45 and the main reason for taking the train is time savings. It identified issues like lack of facilities, long wait times, and presented alternatives like a new ticketing system and improved information displays to address passenger problems. Regression analysis showed travel time highly correlated with distance. The optimal solutions were found to be a new ticketing system and better real-time passenger information to improve the railway experience.

5. • Moratuwa Railway station is situated in a strategic location.
There the Moratuwa Bus Stand and the Railway Station is in
the close proximity. This can be improved to have a
multimodal network while prioritizing the railway.

6. • The space in front of the railway is not optimally utilized
because the space is used for the private vehicles which are
parked and not involving of passenger movement and also due
to the three-wheelers which parked in an unorganized way.
• When taking the station interior the most of the facilities are
not satisfactory. The available seating is not sufficient in peak
hours. And there isn’t a canteen for the station. The washrooms
are not satisfactory. There is a potential to add more facilities.
• The area near the station does not have shopping malls,
departmental stores which help to attract commuters. There is
a possibility to improve those.

Cost Spent for Alighting Station to Destination
Most of the commuters travel on
foot. The commuters tend to take
the train travel solely in order to
reduce transfers to other modes.
To reach station 24% of the
commuters spend Rs. 40 - 50,
specially car users and private
vehicle users. But alighting to
destination, only 2% of them
spend Rs. 40 to 50
After alighting most of them use
public transport to reach final
destination
Bus travelers need to spend 3
times than a season holder.At
Maradana and Dematagoda ,it
may be 4 times
.Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
16. • The train travels costs less. It shows that a higher portion of the cost of the
whole journey is for other modes, rather than the train except on foot.

µ = mean delay time in min. per day per train stopped at Moratuwa station in 2012
µ0 = Current mean delay time in min. per train stopped at Moratuwa station
= Stander deviation of delay time in min. per day per train stop at Moratuwa station in 2012
x = mean delay time in min. per day per train stopped at Moratuwa station on 19/11/2014
There are 3 to 8 train cancellations per month
To understand delay time of rail way, hypothesis test needs to be
considered .In order to do that we gathered former survey details
conducted by Moratuwa station in 2012 and took sample on 19/11/14 and
checked whether is there any change with past mean delay time.

• H0 ; can be rejected at 5% significant level so that H1 ; can be
accepted at 95% confident level
• It can be concluded mean delay time of train in day
significantly less than 13 minutes.
• According to test mean delay time is significantly less than
2012 so we could conclude rail way service is being better
.Due to high speed rail line from Matara to kalutara and
importation of new power set and policies.

due to people who come by foot but after 1000m point
modal has low error

Time Saving Raliability Cost Saving Convenience
Most of the commuters use railway because of its time saving. When compared
with the express train and a normal bus the time taken for the bus is more than the
doubled that of an express train. The other influential factors are convenience, cost
saving and reliability which have the same sequence when calculated.
Time is the critical factor to choose train travel convenience and cost also playing
the major role. But reliability is low when compared to bus service.
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
28. • After thorough analysis the survey guided us for following
solutions regarding the problems faced by commuters
Establishing a supermarket
Introduce new ticketing system
Improving information available for passengers
Build a new cafeteria
Provide designated parking facility
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
29. • It was observed in the analysis that 91% of the commuters are
two way travelers
• 78.7% of the passengers are working
• This gives total of 71.61% who are working and travelling up
and down
• It can be seen that it would be comfortable for them to buy
groceries and household items if there is a nearby supermarket
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
30. • They lack time to go shopping and establishing a supermarket
near station will save time for them.
• There is a high demand for this option
• On the other hand this can be used as a promotional tool to
promote Rail
• By inviting Cargills , Arpico or Keels the cost can be
minimized
• Availability of the space and time taking are the constraints
here
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
31. • It can be seen that 37% choose rail due to time saving and 26%
choose rail due to cost saving
• If we can make ticket issuing faster with special tickets to save
cost and time it will be highly valued by commuters
• We can introduce Swipe cards for tickets
• These can be recharged online, at the station or at the train.
• Parallel to this new ticketing system will enable to book seats
online and provide special low charges for two way travelers
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
32. • From the 82 passengers coming from buses to the station 53%
wait in the station between 10-15 minutes and 41% wait
between 15-30 minutes.
• Also the from 62 passenger coming from other modes 23%
wait between 10-15 minutes at the station.
• The lack of accurate and accessible information regarding train
delays, train arriving time and options available highlighted by
the majority of the passengers.
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
33. • With improved information system real time information
regarding train time table ,delays seats available will be provide
to the passengers at the station
• Passengers can access these information online and they can
plan their journey with rich information.
• This will decrease waiting times and increased reliability will
influence to bus operators to target the people who are going to
station.
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
34. • Large number of passengers are using Moratuwa station
• Current cafeteria is not functioning
• This a major deficiency convinced by the passengers
• Breakfast and short eats can be supplied to passengers and this will save
their time
• Washrooms available at the station are malfunctioning
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
35. • Passengers are facing inconvenience due to this lack of sanitary
facilities.
• Establishing these facilities will increase the standard and the
demand for the station
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
36. • Parking facilities for passengers who are coming from
privet vehicles will be provided under this.
• Nearby land can be acquired easily
• This will increase demand for Moratuwa station.
• However this will need to be extended to park public
buses and privet buses too
Department of Transport and
Logistics Management - 2012
37. • Considering above said reasons and justification with
respect to size of sample that we considered ideal
solution would be,
– Introduce new ticketing system and
– Improving information available for passengers
