Everything around us has a lesson to offer.
It’s only a matter of time before we realise them.
Every once in a while you should turn off that
computer, tablet, iPod or mp3 and learn to
appreciate your surroundings. You might just get
an inspiring moment in your life. Ants are
magnificent creatures in a sense that they seem to
be very organized under their respective rulings.
Not many creatures display such a large yet
systematic colony. I’m no animal expert but by
rough observation, there are several things that we
can learn from ants
This presentation throws a light on some of

TALK THE TALK
AND
WALK THE TALK
EVERLASTING LAWS AND PRINCIPLES FOR
PERSONAL AND CORPORATE ADVANCEMENT
The philosophy of ants says: Learn from
the ways of the ant, and grow wiser.
Why This Topic…
• Being a very small animal, still they make
ultimate creations
• About Swarm Intelligence/Swarm theory
Scientists have studied the efficiency and working
effectiveness of social insects such as ants and bees
for a number of years. Individually, these social
insects are not intelligent but as a group or
collection, they are very intelligent. “The collective
behaviour of these social insects has been dubbed
swarm intelligence” (Bonabeau and Meyer,2001).
Advantages of swarm intelligence
(Bonabeau and Meyer,2001)
1. Flexibility- the group quickly adapts to the
changing environment
2. Robustness- even when one or two
individuals fail, the group is still able to perform
3. Self organizing-the group functions without
much control or supervision
“BY DINT OF HARDWORK,
TEAMWORK , INDUSTRY,
AND PERSISTENCE; ANTS
ARE ABLE TO BUILD
SKYCRAPERS “
- ALÁN MORGAN
INTRODUCTION
• Over 10000 known species of
ants.
• Ants sleep seven hours a day
• Ants can lift 20 times their own
body weight.
• An ant brain has about 250 000
brain cells. A human brain has
10,000 million so a colony of
40,000 ants has collectively the
same size brain as a human.
• The abdomen of the ant
contains two stomachs. One
stomach holds the food for itself
and second stomach is for food
to be shared with other ants.
• Ants are clean and tidy insects.
• Worker ants are given the job
of taking the rubbish from the
nest and putting it outside in a
special rubbish dump,
collecting the food, building
their home and look after the
young
• Each colony of ants has its own
smell. In this way, intruders
can be recognized
immediately.
• If a man could run as fast for
his size as an ant can, he could
run as fast as a racehorse. The
average life expectancy of an
ant is 45-60 days.
Lesson 1: Don’t work under a
commander
• Ants don’t need a commander to tell them to get
started. BE PROACTIVE!
• Ants work faithfully and need no outside
accountability to keep them doing right and doing
the right things. BE HONEST TO YOURSELF!
• Ants work hard and will replace their anthill when
it gets ruined.
BE INDUSTRIOUS!
Lesson 2: Ants Plan Ahead
• Ants store provisions in summer. Ants think
winter all summer. They think of the bad times
even when they are enjoying the good times.
You can’t be so naïve as to think summer will
last forever.
PLAN AHEAD! PLAN FOR THE DOWNSIDE OF LIFE!
Honey ants work all summer to store enough food for the
colony to survive on during the winter. Good planning!
Lesson 3: Ants Stay Positive, ALWAYS!!!
• Ants think summer all winter. During the
winter (i.e. when things are hard), ants remind
themselves that winter does not last long.
They know they’ll soon be out.
STAY POSITIVE! ALWAYS!
Lesson 4: Be alert..
• At the first warm day, the ants are out. If it
turns cold again, they’ll dive back down, but
then they come out the first warm day.
BE AT ALERT FOR OPPORTUNITIES!
Lesson 5: Ants Never Quit, They Only Change
Their Approach
• If they are headed somewhere and you try to
stop them, they will look for another way. DON’T
QUIT!
• Ants will climb over, they will climb under, they
will climb around. They will keep looking for
another way.
BE FLEXIBLE!
• Never quit, always look for a way
to get where you wanted to go.
Lesson 6: Ants Always Do Their Best
• Ants gather (do) all they can possibly do. How
much will an ant gather during summer to
prepare for winter? The answer is: all they
possibly can!
DO ALL YOU CAN! GO THE EXTRA MILE!
Lesson 7: Ants are organized!!!
• There are three types of ants in a colony:
• Queen
• Workers
• Male (security)
• Division of work
• Everybody should know their roles and
responsibility
Lesson 8: Ants share!!
•Ants display unselfish unity
•Sharing is Caring- the ant that finds the food, returns to the
nest to share the information and discovery. The ant does not
keep the information selfishly to itself
Lesson 9: Ants are disciplined…
• March in line one after another, move about in
order and never cut the line!
• Acts of mis-behaviour,mis-conduct and indiscipline
must not be tolerated in organization
Aren’t ants amazing??
Lesson 10: Ants stay busy…
• Ants always have work to do for the colony. They
work all day long!
• Being busy has meaning- when you see ants
marching around you can be sure that they are
headed towards their destination to collect food or
to deposit food in their nest. They never look busy
without reason
• Ants are never lazy or
refuse to do work.
People tend to be happy when they are
kept busy, as this prevent them from
thinking about the negative things in life.
- Amelia Barr
Lesson 11: Ants never give up !!
Even when something is hard or gets in the way of them doing their
best work, they keep trying until they overcome the obstacle!!
• Ants might be small, but
they sure are fast!
• They always do their best
work, but they try to get
things done as quickly as
they can.
• Often they work together
so that they can get more
done in a day.
Lesson 12: Ants are fast…
Lesson 13: Ants
are hard workers!
• Did you know ants can
carry 10 times their body
weight!?!?
• Just because something is
hard, doesn’t mean an ant
will give up… and neither
should you!!
Lesson 14: Ants use TEAMWORK!!
• Everything an ant does, is to benefit the colony. Everyone works together!
• They know their job and they get it done!
• One might be digging tunnels, another might be gathering food.. But every
job is important and everyone will notice if one ant is not doing their job.
• an ant marks a trail leading
to food. All other ants
follow the trail. They trust
the first ant to have set up
the right trail.
• Similarly, a leader should
refrain from micro
managing and trust each
individual to deliver
optimum performance.
Lesson 15: Trust
Lesson 16: Ants
stick together…
• They take care of each
other…
• They help each other…
• They look out for one
another…
• Are ants bucket fillers??
Lesson 17: Ants are self motivated
Lesson 18: Ants have single focus
if you’ve watched a line of ants
keenly they diligently follow the
ant in front. Similarly, a leader
should guide and motivate
his/her team to work towards
one goal and together move in
the same direction if the goal
must be achieved.
Lesson 19:
Ants are
team players
Lesson 20:
Deliver on
time
Problem
• travelling salesman
problem’ (TSP).
• Transportation routing
problem
Solution
• Ant colony
optimization using
principles of
pheromone foraging in
ants
Lesson 21: safer crowd control
• Ant researchers studying leaf-cutting ants found that
‘crowds’ of ants contained in a space with two separate exits
will tend to leave the space by both exits equally under
normal conditions
Lesson 22:
Ants are
persistent.
• Workers ants and male
ants take care of their
child ants as well
• In today’s world,
everybody is more
focused on their career
only
• Work-life balance has to
be maintained
Lesson 23: next generation is everybody’s responsibility
They are everywhere
• In garbage box
• In tiffin box
• In car
• In desert
• In rainy season
Lesson 24:
To adapt to our
surroundings
• Food provider
• Fighter
• Builder
• Care taker
• Planner
• Executor
Lesson 25:
Ants do all possibly
they can.
Lesson 26: They always stay alert
• Ants understand their god gifts and work
within their specific abilities
Lesson 27: Fully utilise themsalves
Lesson 28:The ant believes in slow and
steady
hjgj
• Slow and steady wins the race
• We expect the results overnight
• Rome wasn’t build in a day
Lesson 29: Follower and Leader
relationship
• Same The leader-follower relationship-the leader
ant sources the food and leads the follower ants to
the food source. This is similar to the mentor and
mentee relationship in the business world. The
leader ants appear to teach and repeatedly nudge
the follower ants. Similarly, an effective leader
motivates and teaches the inexperienced and
junior members of the team. A leader coaches and
leads.
• The ants do teach us some good lessons but
according to me, collective consensus does not
always lead to effective decisions in the business
world and life. As philosopher Immanuel Kant put
it “Dare to be wise” and “dare to use your own
understanding”.
• The next time you see a line of ants watch them
keenly before reaching out for the fumigating
spray.
Conclusion
• Management Lessons can be easily grasped by
simply observing ants.
• An organizationcan be made more robust if we
take into consideration the "PLAN AHEAD"
philosophy of ants.
• Have a system where workers are not idle, and
there is always someone available to do a job
when needed.(Note that, even in ant
colonies, laziness exists, and the reproductive
males do nothing).
• Teamwork is better than individuals working
alone, and the whole is
worth more than the sum of its parts.
• Ants teach us that knowledge should be shared.
• Employees can boost up their efficiency if they
imbibe ants' qualities:
1. Hard Work
2. Persistence
3. Patience
THANK YOU!!
