Originally theorised by Frank Wilczek, X was said to be
impossible in equilibrium states. However, Norman Yao
gave a blueprint to make X in non-equilibrium states.
Thus, two separate teams led by Mikhail Lukin and
Christopher Monroe made X separately by using
Ytterbium ions and Nitrogen vacancy diamonds
respectively. X breaks time translational symmetry and
repeats not just over space (like a crystal), but also over
time. X is seen as a new state of matter now.
What is X called?
List of annual dosage of ionising radiation-
•Fukushima natives- 10,000 microsieverts
•US Radiation worker- 50,000 microsieverts
•Astronaut- 100,000 microsieverts
•X- 160,000 microsieverts
X are a type of people who receive the most radiation dosage
on an average in the world. This is due to bio absorption of
radioactive Polonium and Lead by something they regularly
consume. The thing they consume can be so dangerous that
separate rooms are mandated by law in many places for its
Who are X?
This compound with IUPAC name (RS)-Propan-2-yl
methylphosphonofluoridate has been infamous
throughout history as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’
and is 26 times more lethal than cyanide. It is a nerve
agent, and attacks the nervous system by interfering with
the degradation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at
neuromuscular junctions. It was used in Iraq during Iran-
Iraq war, and has very recently been used by rebels in
Syria. In 1995, an attack using this chemical occurred in a
Tokyo subway station, killing 12.
What is this chemical commonly called?
X is a glycoprotein found in the saliva of vampire bats.
It is composed of 411 amino acids, AND functions as
an anticoagulant, thus keeping the blood of the bitten
victim from clotting while the bat is drinking. The
anticoagulant may be useful as a treatment for
strokes and heart attacks. It may also be used as a
blood thinner for the prevention of heart attacks.
Albert and X, by exchanging calculations and letters,
theorised this particle class. Paul then named it after X to
honour him. Peter theorized a field responsible for mass,
and the particle, since it belonged to X's said particle
class, was named after both Peter and X. This sparked a
controversy as X's name's part was written in lowercase,
unlike Peter, which raised questions of racism in science.
Name X, or X's particle class which we are describing.
“We live submerged at the bottom of an ocean of
the element of air, which by unquestionable
experiments is known to have weight”
These words were a part of a letter written by a
prominent 17th century scientist X in 1644 to his
friend, a cardinal and a scientist in Rome.
Who is X?
This was the only diagram in one of the most revolutionary
piece of scientific literature published. Name the book and its
author. (Enlarged pic on next slide)
The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin
X is a hormone produced by the pineal gland
in animals and regulates sleep and
wakefulness. It is often confused with Y,
which is a group of certain pigments found
in most organisms, including humans, and
helps protect against UV radiation.
Give both X and Y (No part points).
This person fixed the value of a
pound in terms of a fixed
quantity of gold, and went
undercover in taverns to find
out counterfeits and personally
ran cases against many of
them. Later in his life, he
studied the Bible extensively,
even though it went against his
earlier ideologies. Who is he,
and why should we mention
him in a science quiz?
On the buzzer (sorry, desk)
During the 1940 Blitzkrieg, the Luftwaffe often struck
under the cover of darkness. In order to make it more
difficult for the German planes to hit targets, the
British government issued citywide blackouts. The
Royal Air Force was able to repel the German fighters
in part because of the development of a new, secret
radar technology. To keep the truth under wraps, the
Ministry of Information popularized a science myth.
What famous science myth are we talking about?
Vitamin A in
This phenomenon is observed when a charged particle
travels faster than the phase velocity of light in a
dielectric medium. Jawaharlal Nehru observed this
phenomenon in India’s first nuclear reactor, and,
mesmerized by it, named the reactor ‘Apsara’. Neil
DeGrasse Tyson called it 'the Sonic Boom of light'.
What is the effect behind the said phenomenon?
Hennig Brand did this in 1669- Brand's process
originally involved letting urine stand for days until it
gave off a terrible smell. Then he boiled it down to a
paste, heated this paste to a high temperature, and
led the vapours through water, where he hoped they
would condense to gold. Instead, he obtained a
white, waxy substance that glowed in the dark.
What did he synthesize for the first time?
X was an Austrian-Swedish scientist who received many
awards and honors late in her life, but she did not share in the
1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for nuclear fission that was
awarded exclusively to her long-time collaborator Otto Hahn.
In the 1990s, the records of the committee that decided on
that prize were opened. Based on this information, several
scientists and journalists have called her exclusion "unjust",
and X has received a flurry of posthumous honors, including
the naming of chemical element 109 after her in 1997.
Zbtb7, originally named X, is a gene that may act as a
master switch for cancer, and is responsible for the
proliferation of cancer throughout surrounding cells. The
original name X stood for
“POK erythroid myeloid ontogenic factor". The X
Company, not wanting the bad press inherent with its
trademark sharing a name with a cancer-causing gene,
threatened the center with legal action in December
2005, at which point it was decided to rename it as Zbtb7.

First named in 1651 in the map Almagestum Novum, this
particular sea (8.5°N 31.4°E) is known for a specific bluish
tint which sets it apart (due to higher metal content). It
has four bays- the Bay of Love, Bay of Roughness, Bay of
Harmony and Bay of Honor. On 20 July, 1969, the sea
entered history books when these words were
transmitted from here- 'The Eagle has landed'. Someone
accompanying the person who said these words was
commanded to look for 'a large Chinese rabbit, which is
easy to spot since he is always standing on his hind feet in
the shade of a cinnamon tree'.
What is this sea called?
