  2. 2. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Imagine a world where you work from home, a coffee shop, a coworking space, next to a beach or wherever you want, and the only ‘must’ is a stable internet connection. What would it feel like to know that this is your future? Well, get used to this picture because according to all the statistics out there, the percentage of fully remote employees is rapidly growing. I won’t mention any specific rates because different sources are listing different numbers, but all in the same direction. Remote work is the future and it’s here to stay.
  3. 3. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Illusion vs. Reality Just because a couple of years ago you couldn’t even think of such a possibility that doesn’t mean things are the same. "It's only when you drop yesterday's assumptions that you can glimpse tomorrow's patterns and possibilities. To see deeper, unsee first.” Umair Haq
  4. 4. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. In my view, this quote says it all but let’s dig even deeper. First of all, we are all susceptible to cognitive biases. This is one of my favorite topics because it explains the illusion we are constantly live in. And it’s okay because a human brain could not process all the available information without frying. Therefore, we filter the reality by functioning with many flaws in our system, regardless if we like it or not. The problem is when we’re not aware of these biases. That’s the reason why we can get stuck into an expired reality and perceive it to present tense, even when the external factors have changed. It’s called normalcy bias.
  5. 5. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. The Normalcy Bias in Nazi Germany This is one of the most remarkable examples that I like to exemplify when the time is right. Normalcy bias is a form of denial about anything that changes around you. You refuse to see it because it contradicts your inner peace and carefully formed habits. In Nazi Germany, all the signs were there for the Jews. Discrimination, harassment, and oppression were something that happened on a daily basis around the neighborhoods.
  6. 6. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. But 450.000 Jews, mostly from wealthy families couldn’t believe that anything worse it’s possible. Every time they faced a bad signal or action towards them or others they thought the worse has ended. They continued feeling this way until the day when their home doors opened, and a group of Nazis took them by force directly to a concentration camp. History holds lifesaving values.
  7. 7. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. The Normalcy Bias Today We all leave in our normalcy biased world. Some more than others. Same happens with companies. Long established traditionalist companies, led by heads who love to keep the status quo, will suffer the most. Some jobs cannot be done remotely. But these will be around 20% in the nearly future. The change is here, but many don’t see it, and when “the new NOW” will be established they will receive it like a shock or an earthquake. Especially IT companies should make the switch as soon as possible. It’s not hard to understand why they were among the pioneers who went remote.
  8. 8. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. I am amazed at how many IT companies have no remote jobs available yet. None. Let’s be clear here. Home office hours or days are not considered remote; it’s a big difference between the two. The infrastructure of the organization is different when it comes to comparing the partially remote companies with the entirely remote ones. There are various processes to implement, tools that allow employing people without seeing them, let’s say ever, and more. In Romania, for example, I couldn't find any fully remote IT company, and this is odd because the IT workforce is highly competitive and the sector is booming for years. That doesn’t mean we don’t have remote workers for other companies, especially from the US.
  9. 9. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. This article is intended to scan the remote work environment and in the meantime help others to prepare. I also want to point out the good and the bad while searching to get hired. But let’s start with the pros in general.
  10. 10. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Remote work pros: • Flexible workers tend to be happier with their jobs - ResearchIn • “You’re 87% More Likely to Love Your Job If You Work from Home.” – Forbes • It reduces employee turnover – Remote.co • Remote companies save money – Lifesize.com • Remote work can increase worker productivity (up to 13%) and drives employee efficiency • Empowers self-growth and development • Remote workers tend to be more educated • Encourages a healthy work-life balance
  11. 11. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Interesting facts: • The median salary for remote workers is higher than that of in-office workers. Developers who work remotely, for example, can earn as much as 40 percent more than their office-based counterparts. - Flexjobs • On average, remote workers are in their mid-40s and older - WebBee • 43% of the U.S. workforce currently work remotely to some degree - Gallup
  12. 12. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Some companies turned to remote by necessity, others by their founder’s philosophy, but statistically their choice proved to be successful and highly competitive. The growth of a remote company shows numbers that outreach ROI’s of similar companies but without a remote environment. Are you looking for a remote job? In the following part, you’ll find some aspects to consider.
  13. 13. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. How to choose the best remote jobs and companies I’ve started working through my company on remote projects for over three years now. But in the last couple of months, I also immersed myself in a research kind of mode. I studied the remote environment, attended forums, communities, summits, and seminars; created a new circle of people around me and took the profiler approach to find out everything that needs to be known. There are tremendous benefits of working remotely, but since the remote trend is here, many companies are already out there. I won’t name any of them for now, but you can ask me privately. Thing is you can find your dream job, but you can also find a nicely dressed trap. Let’s jump to my findings.
  14. 14. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Top 5 Traits of a “NO” Remote Company
  15. 15. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 1) Micromanagement One of the main aspects of a remote employee is freedom and autonomy. How could you take this out of the equation? But some companies do this by tons of sophisticated tracking tools that can control your computer and check every move you take from scrolling or typing per minute, screenshots, and other forms assuring you’re a good slave.
  16. 16. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 2) No benefits The same type of companies perseveres in their lack of interest for their employees simplifying everything to their benefits. I mean you’ll gain an X amount of money and nothing else. They won’t pay you sick days, vacation, health, nothing extra. You're out in the open.
  17. 17. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 3) No stability Although nothing is assured in life, the agreed terms between you and the company will dictate the norm from the start. If you can be let go any day without an explanation, even if you didn’t do anything wrong that’s a red flag. A good remote company will see in you an equal partner and will respect you, so if you don’t feel that it’s better to stay out. You’ll invest time and effort, and at any moment you can find yourself out and not paid. You cannot plan anything for yourself and your family.
  18. 18. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 4) Flexible hours? Maybe not. Most remote companies display flexible hours as one of the main attractions. But if your job description is full of meetings, tons of chats and requires a lot of availability than your happily decided flexible hours won’t count and you’ll probably find yourself working a lot more hours to make amends. Of course, if you are working in call centers or customer support, the flexibility could be seen a bit differently since these departments need weekend coverage for the clients, but otherwise not so much.
  19. 19. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 5) Lack of Culture and Values If the company has no culture and no values that are important to you than stay away. Your work will probably be a mess, and you won’t be too pleased for long. Your happiness level will be directly proportional to you fitting inside the company’s culture; this will be your ikigai. Also, be aware if there are misfits between the publicly shown cultural values and your job description. For example, if autonomy should be the norm but in your job description is listed that you’ll need to give a one-page report every day at 5 and another weekly report each Friday that’s a mismatch. It means the company is artificially polishing its image while expecting the opposite from his employees.
  20. 20. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Top 5 Traits of a “YES” Remote Company
  21. 21. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 1) Culture As mentioned before, the cultural aspect is critical to a healthy remote company, more important than to a traditional company. Between the best cultural and professional fit, the first will always win. If not, then maybe you’ll find yourself somewhere in the list above. The cultural fit will control retention, happiness level, onboarding process and every step on the way for the employee.
  22. 22. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. If the cultural fit between the employee and the company is checked the rest will be easier and other flaws can be overlooked. You cannot fake it because it’s no way to hide your traits for long and you’ll become unfit pretty soon. The best remote companies will have a perfect match between their culture and job requirements. Note that some of these companies use the term values instead of culture.
  23. 23. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 2) Genuine Care They want you to be happy. Really! I mean the perks offered are the testament to their value. Such company will think from the employee stand of view because they understand the importance of all those pros mentioned above. Therefore, you’ll find perks from them such as home office budget; an amount for personal development, books, and training; paid holidays and genuine encouragement to take them, up to 4-6 weeks per year.
  24. 24. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Monthly co-working space or coffee shop budget for those who are happier working outside of the house; healthcare; dental allowance; life insurance; wellbeing allowances for sports activities, massage or spa; parental leave between 12-18 weeks; retreats with or without family members. Don’t expect to find all of them every time, but an excellent remote company will always respect holidays, will encourage learning and wellbeing.
  25. 25. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 3) Trust and respect These companies work on the premise that their employees are good and trustworthy by nature and they don’t need too much babysitting or micromanagement. Flexibility’s not only a word but a promise. Of course, it’s still a remote environment so you can expect specifically fixed schedules for meetings considerately set to try covering all time zones. Same goes for the retreats; they are encouraged but not mandatory in case you’re facing a hard time to attend them. By the way, seems like all the good ones have retreats on their plate. You’ll see all these traits emphasized in their About Us page, career and blog pages, but also in reviews.
  26. 26. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 4) Transparency The most appealing remote companies tend to be more transparent than others. They keep communication channels open, and you can find out many things about them, which were many times considered taboo or not something that needs to be shared. Their about page is always welcoming, showing team members or the entire team, sometimes with contact data, so you can research or reach out to them if you want to.
  27. 27. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. Another common trait I found is a very qualitative blog these companies have. Many are displaying financial data about revenues, subscriptions, even salary. The extent of transparency varies, but the general feeling or hunch you’ll have while surfing around their website is that you can become very familiar to who they are as a team and what they are doing. They just look approachable. It’s, in a way very smart, because if you want to find the best cultural fit, you need to reveal yourself at first, right?
  28. 28. Cristina Imre - Remote Work Is Here To Stay. How to find the best companies. 5) Reviews You cannot pass the review test in today’s environment, so you need to check for reviews. Search for every single review you can find, check as many as you can, or all. Find a balance between them, and you’ll have the final view about the company. There is no company without bad reviews, but what’s the ratio? How many are those compared to the good genuine ones? Some research and investigation will tell you the truth. Glassdoor is a particularly useful resource to find reviews and feedbacks.
