  2. 2. What are they <ul><li>Glaciers are giant block of snowy ice </li></ul><ul><li>It takes thousands of years for glaciers to form </li></ul><ul><li>A glaciers slides and moves </li></ul><ul><li>It can crush trees, rock, or anything that gets in it’s way </li></ul>
  3. 3. Where are they? <ul><li>Glaciers are found on every continent but Australia </li></ul><ul><li>They are usually located in polar or mountainous areas </li></ul><ul><li>Antarctica and greenland are home to most of the world’s glaciers </li></ul>

How Glaciers Form <ul><li>Glaciers begin in areas that have snow all year </li></ul><ul><li>As new snow falls, some flakes melt </li></ul><ul><li>Cold temperatures turn the melted snow to ice </li></ul><ul><li>Layers of ice build up </li></ul><ul><li>They press together to make a glacier </li></ul>

Kinds of Glaciers <ul><li>Not all glaciers are the same </li></ul><ul><li>Alpine glaciers are found in the mountains </li></ul><ul><li>Continental glaciers cover large areas of continents </li></ul><ul><li>Tidewater glaciers melt water into the ocean </li></ul><ul><li>Icebergs are glacier bits </li></ul>
  6. 6. How glaciers move <ul><li>Gravity moves glaciers </li></ul><ul><li>Some are more than 1 mile (.6 kilometer) deep </li></ul><ul><li>As a little of the ice melts, the glacier’s edge becomes slippery </li></ul><ul><li>Gravity pulls on melted ice , slowly moving the glacier </li></ul>
