  14. 14. Eskom estimates that about 15 new coal mines would have to come on line by 2015 and that ZAR100-billionwould have to be invested in the domestic coal mining industry by 2018. SHIR would render this redundantWhile Eskom is under enormous pressure to reduce its costs, coal prices are poised to rise by between 9%and 10% a year. With SHIR coal costs would reduce by approx. 45% overnightEskom relies on coal to generate 85% of South Africa’s electricity and has raised concerns about the qualityand quantity of coal received from local producers. SHIR coal resolves both these issuesSouth Africa is one of the world’s largest suppliers of thermal coal, but most of the product is exported toEurope and fast-growing markets in Asia, mainly China and India. SHIR coal would generate double theincome from these Exports.Coal accounted for 18% of the revenue that South Africa generated from commodity exports and was rankedas the fourth-largest mineral that the country produced in 2012. SHIR coal would double this revenueWhile South Africa is the twenty-eighth largest economy in the world, it is the fourteenth largest contributorof greenhouse gases (435 Mt/year).
