  4. 4. Aaron was a prodigy A prodigy of the internet
  5. 5. unexcited about making money and businesses But Aaron was Truly
  6. 6. He just wanted to make the world a better place
  7. 7. Aaron started like a normal boy Like everyone,
  8. 8. Aaron
  9. 9. all very bright He had 3 brothers
  10. 10. at a really young age But Aaron learn to learn
  11. 11. Learning
  12. 12. By himself!! He learn to read at age 5
  13. 13. he started with computers Around the same age
  14. 14. theinfo.com At age 12 he built a website
  15. 15. It let users write articles and edit the information they thought it was bad theinfo

  17. 17. He won a price for the website
  18. 18. And became involved on the web
  19. 19. And started to work on RSS
  20. 20. At age 13!
  21. 21. He built the plumbing for all RSS
  22. 22. And got more involve
  23. 23. RSS convention
  24. 24. He hated high school
  25. 25. and drop several times
  26. 26. And was more interested on the Internet
  27. 27. He was also very interest in Copyright
  28. 28. And the internet collided And antique copyright system
  29. 29. And he was going to fix it
  30. 30. about copyright He went to the Supreme Court hearing
  31. 31. Supreme Court
  32. 32. And learn about
  33. 33. But whats Creative Commons???
  34. 34. Aaron handle all the “computer parts”
  35. 35. He wrote the specifications and infrastructure
  36. 36. He was 15
  37. 37. At the CC launch
  38. 38. In 2005 he drop from college
  39. 39. And got into Y Combinator
  40. 40. With 4 friends he started a little website
  41. 41. A website called
  42. 42. Reddit
  43. 43. And quickly was bought by another company
  44. 44. Now, money was not something to worry about
  45. 45. Ever...
  46. 46. He was 18 years old
  47. 47. But he didn't care much about money
  48. 48. He hated working for a Corporation
  49. 49. And quickly got himself fired
  50. 50. After a while he started working on other projects
  51. 51. Among them OpenLibrary.org

  53. 53. Having access to public information was very important for Aaron
  54. 54. Aaron vs the Pacer System
  55. 55. The Pacer system is where all the federal court records are stored
  56. 56. What is pacer?
  57. 57. So what Aaron did?

  59. 59. Pacer was free in some libraries of some states
  60. 60. Python FTW!
  61. 61. recursively downloaded all documents Aaron wrote a script that
  62. 62. Aaron was scouted by the FBI but did not press charges
  63. 63. had to change their policies about the documents And ultimate the government
  64. 64. His passion for knowledge and libraries kept going
  65. 65. And began to look and academic articles
  66. 66. The Jstor case
  67. 67. All the work, the knowledge is lock away
  68. 68. By multibillion dollars company
  69. 69. Aaron got into MIT and realize that they had access to those articles
  70. 70. He got into MIT and register and new labtop
  71. 71. and again, Python FTW!
  72. 72. Because Wifi was slow he plugged his PC to the network
  73. 73. But they found it...
  74. 74. They didn't unplug it
  75. 75. They didn't turn it off
  76. 76. They installed a camera...
  77. 77. Police arrest him shortly
  78. 78. And the investigation was taken over by the Secret Service
  79. 79. And was being charge as a “terrorist”
  80. 80. As a “hacker”
  81. 81. And described as a thief
  82. 82. It was bad timing for Aaron
  83. 83. Wikileaks had just started leaking
  84. 84. Bradley Manning had leaked info
  85. 85. So Aaron got all the attention of the Criminal System
  86. 86. He was offered a deal if he plead guilty
  87. 87. 5 years and 1 million dollars!
  88. 88. He was used to set an Example!!
  89. 89. He rejected the deal!
  90. 90. In the mean time, while the case was worked out
  91. 91. Aaron became the go to person of internet things
  92. 92. And was in the news a lot
  93. 93. But not always for good things
  94. 94. On July 14, 2014 Aaron was indicted on 4 felony charges
  95. 95. And they arrested him and put him in solitary confinement
  96. 96. He is now facing 35 YEARS in prison
  97. 97. Later that day he is release by paying 100,000 bale
  98. 98. The same day Jstor drop the charges and decline to keep the case
  99. 99. But the government will keep the case
  100. 100. They wanted to make an example out of Aaron
  101. 101. But he continue to be outspoken about internet issues
  102. 102. Now against a bill to control the internet
  103. 103. SOPA
  104. 104. Copyright?
  105. 105. SOPA ?
  106. 106. He setup a VOIP service to call Congress
  107. 107. Million on people called
  108. 108. And congress become to wonder...
  109. 109. And everything when black
  110. 110. And Aaron Won!
  111. 111. But the happiness was not long
  112. 112. A year after it, Aaron was arrested
  113. 113. They added 13 felony counts
  114. 114. He was isolated from friends and family
  115. 115. He was restricted in every way
  116. 116. Aaron rejected the plea deal and a trial date was set
  117. 117. He got depressed under all the pressure
  118. 118. And the worst happened
  119. 119. The world has lost one of the great minds of our generation
  120. 120. We can all change the world!
