  2. 2. Relative Velocity <ul><li>We will find out: </li></ul><ul><li>That 2 objects will be on a collision course when their relative velocities points along a line joining them </li></ul><ul><li>How to work this out </li></ul><ul><li>How to add vectors by adding ‘tip to tail’ </li></ul>
  3. 3. Relative Velocity What happens when… A cricketer catches a ball? You see another plane out of your plane’s window? Will it hit us?

Relative Velocity <ul><li>On a sheet of graph paper draw a plane in the top right hand corner… </li></ul><ul><li>Draw a vector to represent 200m/s velocity </li></ul><ul><li>Draw another plane at a random angle relative to the original plane (the are both aiming for the same corner of the paper) </li></ul><ul><li>Label this with a vector of 200m/s too </li></ul>Will they collide?
  5. 5. Relative Velocity <ul><li>Subtract the velocity of one of the planes from each plane by drawing the same magnitude vector in the opposite direction </li></ul>These will cancel out
  6. 6. Relative Velocity <ul><li>Add the vectors ‘tip to tail’ </li></ul><ul><li>See if the resultant velocity hits your plane </li></ul><ul><li>If it does, take evasive action!!!!! </li></ul>
