World War I
First World War began on 28 July 1914 and ended on
11 November 1918. Referred to by contemporaries as
the "Great War", its belligerents included much
of Europe, Russia, the United States and Turkey, while
fighting expanded to cover the Middle East, Africa and
parts of Asia.
Names
Prior to World War II, the events of 1914–1918
were generally known as the Great War or
simply the World War. In October 1914, the
Canadian magazine Maclean's wrote, "Some
wars name themselves. This is the Great
War." Contemporary Europeans also referred to
it as "the war to end war" and it was also
described as "the war to end all wars" due to
their perception of its then-unparalleled scale,
devastation, and loss of life. After World War II
began in 1939, the terms became more standard,
with British Empire historians, including
Canadians, favouring "The First World War" and
Americans "World War I“.
First World War I

The term world war was first coined in
September 1914 by German biologist and
philosopher Ernst Haeckel. He claimed that
"there is no doubt that the course and
character of the feared 'European War' ... will
become the first world war in the full sense of
the word," in The Indianapolis Star on 20
September 1914.

PURPOSE
This was a war to restore the new world order, it
collapsed the 4 powerful empires of Europe and the
world at that time: the Russian Empire, the German
Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman
Empire, profoundly changed the face of Europe and the
world. However, despite being such a bloody and fierce
war, this war did not solve the root contradictions and
the "new world" it created also put Europe and the
world in front of problems and problems. Other
contradictions are even more serious such as the
arising of the communist state in Russia, militarism and
fascism in Italy, Germany and Japan, division and
violation of the right of people to self-determination. ..
Those problems would lead to the outbreak of the
Second World War. That is why some researchers think
that World War II is just a continuation of World War I
after nearly 20 years of rest.
5
World War I occurred between two military alliances
formed after the nineteenth century: one side was an
alliance of three empires Britain, France, and Russia,
known as the Tripartite Entente (in English) French
entente means consensus, treaty) later the United
States and a number of other countries joined; the
other side was the Central Powers faction, also known
as the Triple Alliance, consisting of Germany, Austria-
Hungary and the Ottomans.
However, Italy later fought on the side of the Entente
trilateral, but the Central Alliance had additional allies,
the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. While the role of the
main allies in the Tripartite Entente was fairly even in
shouldering the war's weight, on the Central Alliance
side the role of major allies was more blurred, with only
Germany playing a pivotal role. Because the main
contradiction that caused the war was associated with
the political and economic ambitions of the German
empire at that time. At that time, the two most
powerful military powers of Europe were Germany and
Great Britain.

SCALE & NATURE
The War of 1914 was a senseless, aggressive
imperialist war. Each country participating in the war,
regardless of side, has the purpose of profiteering,
expanding its power, occupying more colonies, and
plundering the other's colonies.
This war was one of the most influential events in world
history. This was a war with the main battlefield
covering Europe and affecting the whole world, drawing
all the major powers of Europe and North America into
the war with a death toll of over 19 million people, and
at the same time there were the destructive power and
influence on the material and spiritual of humanity is
very deep and lasting.
