Researcher Development Framework (RDF)Researcher Development Framework is a tool for planning,promoting and supporting the personal, professional and careerdevelopment of researchers in higher education. It describes theknowledge, skills, behaviours and personal qualities of researchersand encourages them to aspire to excellence through achievinghigher levels of development. It details, for different stages ofresearchers’ careers, the competencies that they might aspire to.The RDF was created from empirical data, collected throughinterviewing researchers, to identify the characteristics of excellentresearchers expressed in the RDF as ‘descriptors. The descriptorsare structured in four domains and twelve sub-domains,encompassing the knowledge, intellectual abilities, techniquesand professional standards to do research, as well as the personalqualities, knowledge and skills to work with others and ensurethe wider impact of research. Each of the sixty-three descriptorscontains between three to five phases, representing distinctstages of development or level of performance withinthat descriptor.The RDF provides a comprehensive underpinning for aprofessional development tool that Vitae have developed forresearchers to audit their own skills, knowledge, attributes andbehaviours against those set out on the RDF.
