Expensive hepatitis c drug pushes people to make

  2. 2. Contd… “Thanks to the `Chinese rat poison', I am cured of Hep C“, blinks a message on the screen from one of the patients of FixHepC Buyers Club, a highly organised and popular website hat is enabling Hepatitis C patients in he West to purchase cheaper versions of Sofosbuvir, or Sovaldi a wonder drug, saving millions of patients from he debilitating liver disease. An expensive drug in many parts of he world, the pill is turning out to be a study on how hapless patients are pushed to desperation. While those n affluent countries like the US are hunning a tag of $84,000 for the full course of treatment and arriving in droves to cheaper destinations, some of those in low and middle income nations are finding unique routes, often dangerous, to beat the disease. Patients are buying the active ingredients that go into making the medicine off the internet and making their own capsules. The `Chine e rat poison' that patients are glee ul about is a reference to the active pharmaceutical ingredients purchased in bulk from a Chinese manufacturer off the internet, which they are using to formulate their doses. 3. 3. Contd… “A year ago, we did not have the access to Sofosbuvir combination, because of which we would buy the API from China and India and formulate our own drugs. Now, we see in countries like the US, Romania, Canada and the UK, patients are buying the API and formulating the Hep C drugs. People are doing this because desperate times call for desperate measures. The drug is too expensive for people to buy , which is forcing them to resort to these measures,“ Dr James Freeman founder of the FixHepCBuyers Club in Australia told ET. Three years ago, when Gilead launched Sofosbuvir at $84,000 in western countries, it signed voluntary licenses with Indian generic drug makers to sell the drug at $1000 (or `65000) for 12-week treatment. This gave an opportunity to Dr Freeman, who has been facilitating the Hep C drug supply directly with patients by shipping them generic versions of Sovaldi and the follow-on drugs like Harvoni from Indian suppliers for nearly $2000. But even that is an expensive proposition for many patients, triggering the make-it-yourself trend. 4. 4. Contd… “The cost of a treatment combination using APIs is about half the cost of buying the Indian generic treatment“ writes Greg Jefferys, a Hep C patient who has become a brand icon of sorts giving other patients various tips and suggestion to buy cheap Hep C drugs. Jefferys explains buying a 12-week treatment of Indian generic Harvoni to treat Hep C genotype 1 will cost about $1,400, including shipping. To buy the API equivalent would be less than $750. The API route has also become an easier way to deceive the customs who get suspicious looking at the larger parcels of medicines that are shipped in bottles. 5. 5. Contd… Globally , there are nearly 150 million patients who are infected with Hep C and drugs like Sofosbuvir are important interventions to treat these disease. Doctors say it is all the more imperative that these drugs are affordable. Dr Mandar Kubal, Director, Infectious Diseases & Pulmonary Care, Mumbai, who is a keen watcher of the buyers' club on the internet says this is a worrying trend. “It is really dangerous, especially with concerns of toxicity and safety . This trend also shows that people are aggressively looking for cheaper options“, Kubal told ET. Though the trend has not caught up in India yet, he added.
