Defining diversity and inclusivity
Diversity The goal
Inclusivity
Companies truly
embracing and valuing
employees of different
backgrounds - something
that’s reflected by hiring
practice and employee
demographics.
Companies successfully
supporting a diverse
workforce by creating an
environment that is
welcoming and makes
each employee feel like
they belong.
Exchange of ideas leading
to creative solutions and
innovations, and
employees that feel happy -
improving motivation,
performance, and business
outcomes.

1. Get the buy-in from the top
For diversity and inclusivity policies to succeed, support from the company’s leaders is vital.
Educate your company’s leaders
Make sure your company’s leaders
truly understand the importance of
diversity and inclusivity, rather than
view it as a PR initiative.
You can do this via diversity and
inclusivity training session for
them, and creating a safe space for
Q&A.

2. But a top-down
approach isn’t enough...
Remember to consider differences in
employee values and experiences across
the organization via frequent one-to-one
check-ins, so that relevant and lasting
changes can be made at different levels -
top down, bottom up, and middle out.

3. Quotas don’t necessarily
mean inclusion...
While diversity quotas may be able
to boost diversity numbers,
especially if your current employees
aren’t at all diverse, quotas aren’t
enough on their own.
...so create a diversity and inclusion task force to focus on
the employees’ sense of belonging
In addition to diversity quotas (if you’re going to
implement them), you also need to help employees feel
a sense of belonging.
You can do this by creating a diversity and inclusivity
taskforce to help come up with policies. The task force
itself should be diverse, representing:
● Social demographics
● Job function
● Seniority level
● And more.
Important: Be respectful in how you solicit members,
and never make anyone feel tokenized.

Gone are the days where the focus is on finding the right
‘fit’, as this can exclude employees from certain
background and/or prevent them from realizing their full
potential.
Instead, help employees thrive by shifting focus to a
positive company culture, transparent and open
communication, as well as career mentorship and access to
training.
4. Help employees thrive

Create safe spaces
Set up a lactation room for breastfeeding mothers, prayer or
meditation spaces, gender neutral bathrooms, quiet workspace
for introverts, etc.
Make the workplace wheelchair accessible
5. Implement diversity and inclusion efforts
Use inclusive language
Use preferred pronouns for employees (you can even put them in
your email signature) and use gender neutral language - i.e.
“spouse” or “partner” instead of “husband” or “wife”.
Ensure that the workplace can be accessed by a
wheelchair.

6. Embrace flexibility and flexible benefits solutions
Flexible benefits solutions
Instead of relying on one-size-fits-all
employee benefits, flexible or flex
benefits allow each employee to choose
and align their benefits to fit with their
needs and wants. As such, it’s an ideal
solution for diverse and inclusive
organizations.
Being flexible in your approach is also a good bet, as it allows you to cater to a diverse workforce.
