Are your employees productive?
If your employees always seem to be doing busy work and/or don’t seem all that productive, chances are that they
haven’t understood their productivity style.
Or maybe the way you’re currently working
with them doesn’t align with their
productivity style. In which case, it pays to get
your head around this concept.
After all, each one of your employees are
unique in their strengths and weaknesses, and
you should assign them responsibilities that
play to their strengths.

In the book ‘Work Simply: Embracing the
Power of Your Personal Productivity Style’,
author Carson Tate defines four basic
approaches to productivity styles.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach to
being productive, productivity styles gives
individuals the tools and knowledge to
make the most of their innate tendencies.

Let’s explore these four productivity styles in detail:
Note: These productivity styles are simply guidelines. As such, you should take them with a pinch of salt.
The Prioritizer The Planner The Arranger The Visualizer

1. The Prioritizer
The prioritizer thinks in an analytic and logical
way, and is driven by the facts. They establish
beforehand how much time each task will take,
and carefully plan out their time. Tasks that are
most urgent are always completed first.
However, the downside is that that they have a
tendency to be controlling and rigid. They are
also known to have a competitive streak.
What’s more, they sometimes value speed over
excellence.

2. The Planner
Organizing, sequencing, and detailing comes
naturally to the Planner. They are always
creating to-do lists, creating schedules, and
using planning tools. Rest assured, they’re
also very thorough.
How are they different from the Prioritizer?
While the prioritizer likes to complete the
project as soon as possible, the Planner likes
to detail all aspects of the project.
On the other hand, their commitment to the
plan makes them less spontaneous and might
lead to missed opportunities. Like the
Prioritizer, they’re also quite rigid.

3. The Arranger
As for the Arranger, it’s all about emotions and
intuition for them. So it goes without saying that
they make natural communicators and great
team players.
Their weaknesses? They can often miss key details
due to incomplete planning and lose focus on the
end results. They also have the tendency to get
over involved in other people’s responsibilities.

4. The Visualizer
The Visualizer has the ability to look at problems from a
more general perspective, and make connections that may
not seem immediately obvious. They are great when it
comes to innovative ideas, strategic thought, problem
solving, and recognizing new opportunities.
The downside of their out-of-the-box thinking is that they
can be excessively spontaneous and impulsive, which may
impact the completion of projects and task. They’re also
not great at planning ahead or getting down to the nitty
gritty of things.
