PAST STATISTICS <ul><li>Until 1960 USA severely limited the number of Asian immigrate </li></ul><ul><li>As a result there population made up only 4% of the United States </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Smaller than African-American and Latinos </li></ul></ul><ul><li>However, there numbers are increasing rapidly </li></ul><ul><ul><li>From 3.5 million in 1980 to 10 million in 2000 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Exports believe that in 2040 Asians will make up 10% of the United State’s population </li></ul></ul></ul>

MODEL <ul><li>Asian Americans have been called a “model” minority group because they done well economically, socially, and educationally. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This ignores the fact that they are diverse </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For every Asian family with an annual income of $75,000, there is another with less than $10,000 </li></ul></ul>

CHINESE AMERICANS <ul><li>Largest number of Asian in the USA </li></ul><ul><li>In the mid 1800 about 200,000 Chinese people immigrated to this country. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This caused Congress the enact the Exclusion Act in 1882 </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>This banned immigrations from china until the 1960 </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>During that time, Chinese Americans suffered from economic, political, and social discrimination </li></ul>

JAPANESE AMERICANS <ul><li>Recent arrivals to the USA as a immigrant group </li></ul><ul><li>Many came during the early 20 th century </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Attempting the escape political and social upheavals in Japan </li></ul></ul><ul><li>After Pearl Harbor, our government sent Japanese Americans to evacuation camps </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This was similar to branded them as disloyal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cost Japanese Americans billions of dollars </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>In 1988 the USA formally apologized </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sent up a $1.25 billion trust fund </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Aimed to compensate victims of discrimination </li></ul></ul></ul>
