PSA Peugeot Citroën and electric
vehicles, the beginning of the road
PSA Peugeot Citroën is leading the
way in electric vehicles. The Group
has tested this technology since 1989,
and brought to market electric
versions of the Peugeot 106, the
Citroën AX and then the Saxo from
1995 onwards. These vehicles have a
maximum speed of 91km/h and an
autonomy of 75km. In 1998, electric
versions of the Peugeot Partner and
Citroën Berlingo light commercial
vehicles were launched. Some 10,000
electric vehicles were sold by PSA
Peugeot Citroën in the 1990s.

HDi technology for Diesel engines
In 1998, PSA Peugeot Citroën deve-
loped HDi technology for Diesel
engines. HDi engines use common
rail technology, which improves fuel
injection and reduces operating
noise, fuel consumption and pollu-
tant emissions. The Citroën Xantia
was the first vehicle in the Group to
be fitted with an HDi engine in
September 1998. By mid-2015, 21.8
million HDi engines had been
produced for PSA Peugeot Citroën
cars since 1998.

PSA Peugeot Citroën invents the
Diesel particulate filter
To eliminate even the finest particu-
late emissions, PSA Peugeot Citroën
invented the additive Diesel particu-
late filter (DPF). This innovative device
made its world debut on the Peugeot
607 in 2000, before being extended
across the Peugeot, Citroën and DS
ranges from 2009, two years before
the Euro 5 standard made it compul-
sory in January 2011. PSA Peugeot
Citroën has filed 130 patents to
protect its additive particulate filter.

Breakthrough idea – stopping the
engine when the car stops
In a world first, PSA Peugeot Citroën
launched micro-hybrid Stop & Start
technology in 2004. This system cuts
out the engine when the car stops at
red lights or in traffic jams, to improve
fuel efficiency by up to 15% in urban
driving conditions and reduce lab-test
carbon emissions by 5g/km. In 2010,
the Group offered a preview of e-HDi
Stop & Start technology for Diesel
engines.

PSA Peugeot Citroën launched its
MCP compact automated manual
gearbox (BVMP6) in 2005. Based on
the architecture of highly energy
efficient mechanical gearboxes, it
delivers the best possible energy
efficiency performance. Removing
the need for a clutch pedal, it allows
the driver to effortlessly change gear
without taking his/her foot off the
accelerator. It operates in both auto-
matic and manual modes.

Developed collaboratively by PSA
Peugeot Citroën and BMW, EP
engines are produced at Française de
Mécanique in Douvrin, France. Avai-
lable in 1.4l (EP3) and 1.6l (EP6)
versions, the EP engine is a four-cylin-
der petrol engine, which stands out
for its low carbon emissions and
generous torque in the turbocharged
version. The EP engine won the Inter-
national Engine of the Year Award in
the 1.4l-1.8l category for eight years
in a row.

In 2007, PSA Peugeot Citroën and its
partner Michelin introduced VLRR
(very low rolling resistance) Energy
Saver technology. In 2010, the Energy
Saver line-up was renewed with the
launch of ULRR (ultra low rolling resis-
tance) technology. Each of these tech-
nologies, which lowered rolling resis-
tance by 15% compared to the
previous generation, improved fuel
efficiency, cutting carbon emissions
by 2g/km.

Leveraging eco-design to reduce our
environmental footprint
Since 2009, PSA Peugeot Citroën has
been developing a policy to introduce
green materials to reduce its environ-
mental footprint. This reduces vehicle
mass, the use of petroleum-based
plastics, and carbon emissions from
the plastics industry. Eco-design is
about more than just using green
materials. It is an approach that invol-
ves reducing the environmental
impact of the car at each stage of its
life cycle, particularly by improving
fuel efficiency and optimizing the
recyclability of the vehicle.

In 2011, PSA Peugeot Citroën
launched the first hybrid Diesel
technology, HYbrid4. This system,
which lowers carbon emissions,
combines the advantages of a Diesel
engine with those of an electric motor
to bring motorists enhanced features
and performance. The Group's
vehicles fitted with HYbrid4 Diesel
technology are the only vehicles in
their category to offer both the
performance of a four-wheel drive
and a 35% reduction in fuel
consumption compared with a
similar-size Diesel powertrain.

In 2013, PSA Peugeot Citroën
launched BlueHDi, a new exhaust line
that drastically reduces NOx emis-
sions and further cuts carbon emis-
sions (which are up to 4% lower than
on the previous generation of Diesel
engine). The BlueHDi exhaust line
comprises two key elements, an addi-
tive Diesel particulate filter (DPF) and
an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)
system, which reduces the NOx emis-
sions produced by the engine by up to
90%.

In December 2009, the European
Parliament adopted compulsory
emissions standards for new
passenger cars. The objective set was
to bring average carbon emissions
down to 130g/km by 2015. All
carmakers will have to use new
technologies to meet this target,
which will be introduced
incrementally over a four year period,
beginning in 2012. This regulation
applies to passenger cars and carbon
emissions are measured using the
New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

In late 2013, the European Parliament
and the Council of the European
Union reached an agreement on a
regulatory proposal that will require
new passenger cars in the European
Union to comply with the 2020 carbon
emissions targets. The target for new
cars was set at 95g/km.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2020
target represents around 4.1l/100km
for petrol or 3.6l/100km for Diesel.
