What is LinkedIn? “LinkedIn is theworld’s largest professional networkwith over 175 million members andgrowing rapidly. LinkedIn connects youto your trusted contacts and helps youexchange knowledge, ideas, andopportunities with a broader networkof professionals.”
So why should you have aLinkedIn profile? There are many reasons!
LinkedIn allows you the opportunity to maintain professional contactsLinkedIn continues to grow and change through theyears, but many of the characteristics of the site remainthe same, such as prior job and schoolhistory, recommendations and contact information. Inaddition, LinkedIn continues to make upgrades (whichwe’ll be discussing in a later Marketing Monday). You canalso gather and display recommendations from previouscontacts, making it easy for others to gain moreknowledge about who you are and how you work withothers in a professional setting.
Finding and filling job positionsSince LinkedIn centers on job related content, itshould be the first place you look for or post ajob. LinkedIn allows you to search for jobs by JobTitle, Keywords or Company name, as well as amore advanced search. When posting anavailable job, LinkedIn allows you to see whohas viewed the posting as well as see applicantprofiles, making it easier to recruit the correctperson for the position.
Encourage potential business prospectsThere are many opportunities to turn yourinteraction on LinkedIn into potential businessopportunities. An often used addition to a LinkedIncompany page (which we will discuss in next week’sMarketing Monday) is the LinkedIn Group page (seean example here). LinkedIn Groups give you theopportunity to post valuable information, as well asallowing members of the group to post and interactwith one another. You can use this information tohighlight your particular expertise in the field you’rediscussing.
Brand yourselfWhen creating a LinkedIn page, make sure you use the customURL option. This custom LinkedIn URL can be used on so manythings, add it to your email signature, your businesscard, anywhere you display your personal contact information.LinkedIn is most often used to grow your network of otherprofessionals, so make sure that when you meet somebodyremember to add them to your contact list. One thing a lot ofpeople fail to do is finish their page to 100%, making them lesssearchable. Also check for spelling and grammaticalmistakes, others will notice. Remember, when somebodytypes your name or the name of your company into Googleyour LinkedIn page is often in the top 5. Make sure it’s thebest it can be in order to make a good impression.
