Cervical screening coverage and census health-data
1. Cervical screening coverage and
census data
Please send questions to phe.screeninghelpdesk@nhs.net quoting the title of
this presentation
Public Health England leads the NHS Screening Programmes
2. Notes
Coverage is calculated as the number of eligible women having an adequate screening
result within the last 3.5 years (for 25 to 49 age group) or last 5.5 years (for 50 to 64 age
group).
Eligible women are those within the age group and not ceased from screening for clinical
reasons.
Coverage at CCG (clinical commissioning group) level is currently available 6 months in
arrears, so at the end of March 2017 the figures for September 2016 became available.

3. Census 2011: health questions
The statistics for self-assessed 'Good' general health are based on responders who
answered 'Very good' or 'Good' to the general health question in the 2011 Census.
Data is available shed at local authority level in age bands of ‘0 to15’, ‘16 to 24’, ‘25 to
34’, ‘35 to 49’, ‘50 to 64’, ‘65 to 74’ and ‘75 to 84’). For this presentation the ‘50 to 64’
figure was used with the average of ‘25 to 34’ & ‘35 to 49’ combined to give ‘25 to 49’.
Data was available for 150 local authorities.

Notes:
Younger women (25 to 49)
rated their health as good
irrespective of where they
lived. There is no clear link
with coverage.
Older women (50 to 64) had
more variation in their health
assessment. The trend
suggests that areas where
women assessed their health
as good had higher coverage.
