Three waves of Muslim Migration to Canada <ul><li>1871 Census had 13 Muslims in Canada’s population </li></ul><ul><li>First wave: early 20 th century to WWII: small in numbers, mostly from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Turkey </li></ul><ul><li>Second Wave: Post WWII to 1967: Mostly from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan and Iraq, with others from India and Pakistan </li></ul><ul><li>These people were upper-middle class with professional backgrounds </li></ul>

Third Wave <ul><li>After 1967, with largest numbers in the 1990s, 2000s </li></ul><ul><li>Immigration policy had changed, making it easier for Muslims to immigrate to Canada </li></ul><ul><li>In the last 20 years there has been a 400% increase in the number of Canadians who say they are Muslim </li></ul>

Profile of the Muslim Community <ul><li>A young community – average age of Muslims is 28, compared to 37 for the overall population of Canada </li></ul><ul><li>Mostly married and live in large urban centres </li></ul><ul><li>More educated – 33% of men and 23% of women have a university degree; overall CDN population is 15% </li></ul><ul><li>More difficult to find work and make money: unemployment rate for Muslims is nearly twice the national average, median income is 37% below the national average </li></ul>

Diversity of Muslim Population <ul><li>The Muslim population consists of diverse visible minorities, where </li></ul><ul><li>37% is of South Asian decent, </li></ul><ul><li>21% of Arab decent, </li></ul><ul><li>14% is of West Indian decent, and the remaining </li></ul><ul><li>28% is made up of many other ethnicities such African, Chinese, etc. </li></ul>

Muslims in Toronto <ul><li>Similar to the national profile </li></ul><ul><li>More men than women </li></ul><ul><li>5% of all Toronto population is Muslims, making Toronto the highest concentration of Muslims in any city in the US or Canada </li></ul><ul><li>Mostly work in business, sales, trades or management </li></ul><ul><li>44% work as unskilled labour </li></ul>
  8. 8. Inter-religious Marriage <ul><li>9% of Muslims who are married or otherwise part of a couple are with someone who is not a Muslim </li></ul><ul><li>In 1981, this was 13%, in 1991 it was 11% </li></ul><ul><li>Canadian average is 19%, having grown from 15% in 1981 </li></ul>
