1. 1. A personal timeline of educational technology
 2. 2. Overview

My name is Osamu Ono.

I started school in 1987 in Japan.

I graduated from high school in 2002 in Hawaii.

I first went to college at Kapiolani Community College in 2003.

When I finish my degree, I hope to become a Biology Teacher in High School.

 3. 3. Educational technology is the use of modern day technology such as the internet, digital media, computers, while incorporating techniques to educate students in a creative and active manner using different modes of learning to their educational benefit.
 4. 4. Web sites on ed tech history

History of Educational Technology http://www.docstoc.com/docs/426986/History-of-Educational-Technology

The History of technology in the Classroom http://www.ehow.com/about_5544014_history-technology-classroom.html

Computers in Education: A Brief History http://thejournal.com/Articles/1997/06/01/Computers-in-Education-A-Brief-History.aspx?Page=1

 5. 5. Kindergarten technology

No computers in classroom

TV shows and Videos used for some learning

Games also used for learning

 6. 6. High school technology

Developed a computer lab with iMacs opened to the public my freshmen year

Videos for visual educational source

CD players also used in classrooms for audio lectures

Video camera use for presentation projects

 7. 7. College technology

Computers used by instructors for PowerPoint Lectures, YouTube video, etc.

Computer a necessity for students

Students working with laptops are common

iClicker for tests and surveys in the classroom

Digital Media Uses (Podcasts, recorded lecture, etc)

Laulima used to receive and send assignments

School E-mail account for students and faculty to connect

UH Unix Account to create personal web pages, as well as use for file storage

 8. 8. A vivid technology learning experience

On-line classroom discussion

Tutorial software (Math Blaster, etc)

Reading on-line articles

Watching educational media on-line

 9. 9. A technology I want to use in my classroom

I want every student in my class to have a laptop with them in class. With the laptop, my students can use the internet for research while in class, work on projects/essays at school, have the option of recording the class session, and also be able to use educational software in class instead of the computer lab.

 10. 10. My vision of the classroom of the future

Since I’m teaching Biology, I want a classroom that has the technology to virtually send you back in time to observe all the natural phenomena that occurred to create the world as it is today. Kind of like a time machine, but doesn’t physically take you back (if you physically return to the dinosaur age, you might never come back. But if you return virtually, you can still experience the dinosaur age but be fully safe). It would also be great if you can virtually go to inside cells, bacteria, the deep ocean, etc, using this system.

 11. 11. A challenge for teaching

Because I want to work for schools in the poor and rough communities, the budget of the school would make it hard to obtain modern technology. I might have to buy my own computer, TV, media players, etc if the school can’t financially provide them.

Another challenge I might have is helping the students obtain ways of using technology in their learning. If they are from a poor community, it is less likely that they have a personal computer at home. Even if they have personal computers, there is also another possibility that they are not familiar with the updated technologies and programs.

 12. 12. Words of wisdom

Aristotle: “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.”
