  • This is the migration route of Hokkaido chum salmon. As you know well, they have two feeding and growth areas: the Okhotsk Sea as the nursery area, and the Bering Sea as carrying capacity.
  • Geomagneting Imprinting and Homing in Salmon and Steelhead

    1. 1. Salmon Geomagnetic Orientation• The “BIG IDEA” – HOW do salmon DO it? – Orientation, homing, migration, navigation – Homing: straying• Why is it important to Oregonians? – Salmon management, conservation, harvest – Hatchery: Wild considerations – Coastal energy development
    2. 2. Hans NordengAn alternative hypothesis for salmon homing – kinrecognition
    3. 3. Embryo orientationVertical movement in substrate
    4. 4. Juvenile behavior – imprinting?Natural vs Wild environment
