“the International Relations of
Ukraine: Scientific Searches and
Findings”
Dear ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you
from the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, and thank
the organisers of the webinar for inviting me
to participate.
The editorial board of the yearbook “the
International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific
Searches and Findings” has prepared a short
note about it, which I would like to share
with you.
http://mzu.history.org.ua/index.php/MZU
After regaining of Ukraine's independence in
1991, the process of active development of
periodicals system was launched in the national
socio-humanities. It has become an important
tool for the formation of communication and
information space as a basic element of the
development and popularization of scientific
thought.
The first specialized periodical on world
history in independent Ukraine was the
yearbook “the International Relations of
Ukraine: Scientific Searches and
Findings”, founded in 1991 at the Institute
of History of Ukraine of the National
Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The mentioned yearbook, as the successor
of the collection “Historical Studies.
History of Foreign Countries” (1975-1989),
ensures the coordination of research by
representatives of “the Historical European
Studies” Ukrainian academic school, whose
founders are corresponding members of the
National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
F.P.Shevchenko (1914-1995), I.M.Melnykova
(1918-2010) and P.S.Sokhan’ (1926-2013).
Since 1991 it has been headed by the Head of
the Department of World History and
International Relations (since 2012 – the
Department of History of International
Relations and Foreign Policy of Ukraine),
Corresponding Member of the National
Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
S.V. Vidnyanskyj.
The academic school specializes in:
- developing the theory and methodology in
European History studies;
- the History and current problems of
European International Relations and Foreign
Policy;
- the History of Ukraine's and Ukrainian
people's international relations, in particular,
coverage of the Ukrainian presence in the
Central-Eastern Europe geopolitical space
and in the cultural and civilizational space of
Europe at large;
- Ukraine's foreign policy since
independence, providing scientific basis for
the European choice of Ukraine and studying
its experience in joining the European
integration process and creating a positive
image for Ukraine worldwide, particularly, in
the European Union;
- the Recent History and the European
integration experience of foreign European
States, in particular, of Ukraine's Western
neighbours.
The yearbook covers topical issues of world
history, especially of Central and Eastern
Europe, and international relations, theory and
methodology of history, source studies and
historiography. It focuses on international
relations of Ukraine in the world history
context, participation of the Ukrainian state in
today’s system of international relations.
The articles, published during 1991-2021
in 30 issues of “the International
Relations of Ukraine: Scientific Searches
and Findings” (more than 650 articles in
total), help to recreate a
multidimensional panorama of
international relations within the
territory of present-day Ukraine from the
times of Kyivan Rus' to the early XXI
century against the background of the
world historical process.
In general, among the wide range of issues
raised on the pages of the yearbook “the
International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific
Searches and Findings”, various aspects, in
particular theoretical and methodological,
of the complex theme “Ukraine in the
history of Europe” have a significant role,
namely: Ukrainian-European historical ties
and interactions, the main stages,
directions and results of cooperation
between Ukraine and the European Union in
the context of globalization.
Attention is focused on the key issues of
the history of European integration, the
ideological foundation of which, at the
stage of its formation after the Second
World War, was the achievement of peace
in the long term, the development of
effective mechanisms for the prevention of
international conflicts, the establishment
of democratic values, ensuring economic
progress and social consensus.
In recent years, the international cooperation
of the yearbook has been expanded and it has
been established in the European information
space, in particular through the creation of its
website and inclusion in European databases:
Centrum Otwartej Nauki (CeON) (Ministerstwo
Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego, Polska Akademia
Nauk i Konferencja Rektorów Akademickich
Szkół Polskich); ERIH PLUS; The Central
European Journal of Social Sciences and
Humanities (Polska Akademia Nauk, Akademie
Věd České Republiky, Magyar Tudományos
Akadémia, Slovenská Akadémia Vied).
The composition and geographical coverage of
the editorial board, which includes scholars
from the Institute of History of Ukraine of the
National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as
well as from Charles University (Prague, the
Czech Republic); Institute of Social Sciences
of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Košice,
the Slovak Republic); Matej Bel University
(Banska Bystrica, the Slovak Republic);
Nicolaus Copernicus University (Toruń, the
Republic of Poland); Prešov University (Prešov,
the Slovak Republic);
State Institution “Institute of World History
of the National Academy of Sciences of
Ukraine” (Kyiv, Ukraine); Taras Shevchenko
National University of Kyiv (Kyiv, Ukraine);
Uzhhorod National University (Uzhhorod,
Ukraine); Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian
National University (Ivano-Frankivsk,
Ukraine); V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National
University (Kharkiv, Ukraine); West
Ukrainian National University (Ternopil,
Ukraine), has been expanded.
The principles of the editorial policy of
the yearbook “the International Relations
of Ukraine: Scientific Searches and
Findings” include the promotion of
scientific communication, coordination of
research and the creation of joint
projects of scholars from different regions
of Ukraine and foreign countries by
expanding the geographical coverage of
the author's team, editorial board and
reviewers.
Accordingly, the scholars from the Czech
Republic, Hungary, the French Republic,
the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of
Belarus, the Republic of Bulgaria, the
Republic of Italy, the Republic of Poland,
the Russian Federation, the Slovak
Republic, the Swiss Confederation and,
above all, from many cities of Ukraine
contributed to the work on 30 issues of the
yearbook. It contains articles in Ukrainian,
Czech, English, French, German, Polish,
Slovak.
During its 31-year history, the yearbook
“the International Relations of Ukraine:
Scientific Searches and Findings” has
gained the authority of an influential
Central and Eastern European scientific
periodical that contributes to the
coordination of theoretical and
methodological research in the field of
world history, comprehension of key
problems of the world historical process
and Ukraine's place in it.
By integrating into the international
intellectual space, a powerful team of
scholars, united around the yearbook,
participates in the development of science
diplomacy, the importance of which is
increasing against the background of
globalization, unprecedented growth of the
influence of information technology, the
threat of hybrid wars, the actualization of the
role of “soft power” in international relations.
The yearbook adheres to the policy of “open
access”, which provides the opportunity for
every Internet user to freely read, download,
copy, print, make links to the full texts of
articles, while respecting copyright. The full-
text version of the yearbook for 2010-2021 (19-
30th issues) is available on the website of its
founder and publisher – the Institute of History
of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences
of Ukraine:
http://resource.history.org.ua/ejournal/EJ000
0011
In 2019, the official website of “the
International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific
Searches and Findings” was created on the OJS
platform in accordance with the requirements
of the CrossRef agency:
http://mzu.history.org.ua/index.php/MZU
This site contains issues of the yearbook for
2017-2021 (26-30th issues). Each article of
these issues has a separate home page on the
site, which contains the text of the article, its
DOI, as well as information about the authors,
the title of the article, abstract, keywords in
English and Ukrainian.
http://mzu.history.org.ua/index.php/MZU
The site presents the principles of the
editorial policy of the yearbook, information
about the members of the editorial board,
instructions for authors in English and
Ukrainian.
Since 2016, the yearbook is included in the
CEJSH database, founded by the Polish
Academy of Sciences, the Academy of
Sciences of the Czech Republic, the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Slovak
Academy of Sciences. It presents full-text
versions of the yearbook issues for 2016-2021
(25-30th issues).
CEJSH
On March 3, 2022, an Agreement was
concluded between the University of
Warsaw and the Institute of History of
Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences
of Ukraine on the posting of the
“International Relations of Ukraine:
Scientific Research and Findings” on the
platform “the Library of Science”, where
the full-text version of the 30th issue is now
available.
https://bibliotekanauki.pl/journals/3989
Thus, the choice made by the yearbook “the
International Relations of Ukraine: Scientific
Searches and Findings” of “open access”
model, its inclusion in European databases, in
particular on the platform “Library of
Science” (with 1626 journals) contributes to
the promotion and further development of its
activities and international cooperation,
increases the visibility of its content on the
Internet, expanding readership and citations,
for which we are grateful to the founders of
the platform.
Ultimately, all this helps to more effectively
implement the principles of editorial policy
and objectives of the yearbook. In
particular, we are talking about the
coordination function of this yearbook,
integration of efforts of authors, editors and
reviewers from Ukraine and Central and
Eastern Europe in general, as well as their
consolidation into single teams in order to
reflect the latest trends in the development
of scientific thought, discussion of topical
issues and debates.
Thank you for your attention and
support
