The Advantages of Remote Visual Inspection § Cost Reduction ü See inside components without disassembling them to reduce the number of human resources required and to save time § Anytime, Anywhere, Minimal Training ü No special (external) qualifications are required ü Internal visual inspection ü Simple and easy to operate ü Easy to transport ü Operable in small work areas RVI is a visual inspection, and visual defects can be measured. For subsurface/internal defects, other Olympus products may be used, including NDT and ANI.

APPLICATION OVERVIEW § Temperatures in the hot section can reach over 1200 °C (2192 °F), which is past the melting point of the materials used. § Due to high internal temperatures, a thermal barrier coating is used to help protect the material from burning. In addition, thousands of cooling holes are incorporated to enable a barrier or comparatively cool area to flow over the surface of the blades. § RVI is used to inspect the integrity of the barrier coating and to make sure that these holes are not blocked. INSPECTION METHOD § Insert the scope through an opening in the turbine, such as an inlet or outlet, or parts from which a fuel nozzle and a thermocouple are detached. (Some turbines have borescope ports.) § Use remote visual inspection to find and determine any loss of coating or blocked cooling holes. § Measure and map defects and coating loss for condition monitoring. Working space is often small, forcing the inspector to secure a place to install the videoscope. 2. Since the turbine is large, the inspector needs to carry the videoscope to do the inspection.
