Peculiarities of Synonyms

 1. 1. Peculiarities of Synonymy in “A Walk to Remember” by Nicholas Sparks
2. 2. Introduction
A large number of new words and terms flock into the English vocabulary and English has a variety of expressive methods making it possible to express the same meaning by different words. Therefore English synonyms are so abundant that it is possible to describe the colorful world and to express the complicated, delicate human thought and emotions. But they cause many problems such as the correct choice of words from synonyms. The reason for this problem is the insufficient knowledge of the distinction of English synonyms, which have differences in many aspects.
3. 3. What are synonyms?

Many scholars have different opinions regarding the definition of synonyms.
 4. 4. For example, Melenciuc explains synonyms as words of the language which have almost identical meanings but are different in morphemes
 5. 5. Arnold offers another definition which describes the notion “synonymy” explained by identity of meaning and interchangeability
 6. 6. If we see the Charles Smith’s definition, synonyms are words which agree in expressing one or more characteristic ideas in common
 7. 7. In fact, synonyms are only such words as may be defined wholly or almost wholly, usually they are distinguished from one another by an added implication or connotation, or may differ in their idiomatic use

Sources
In the most cases, synonyms may be found only with the help of dictionaries
One can find the opposite meaning through the antonym or find a particular synonym by consulting the list of synonyms
There are many dictionaries nowadays which help us to enrich our vocabulary in order to express ourselves clearly
There are such dictionaries as Merriam-Weber’s dictionary; Allan’s synonyms and antonyms; Richard Soule’s dictionary of English synonyms and synonymous or parallel expressions etc.
8. 8. Classification of Synonyms

From the point of view of some scholars

Synonyms are classified into 3 groups:
Ideographic-words conveying same notion but they differ in shades of meaning;
Stylistic-words which differ in stylistic characteristics;
Absolute synonyms- words coinciding in all their shades of meaning and in all their stylistic characters.
John Lyon stresses most on the importance not confusing near synonyms , which are words not identical in meaning with partial synonyms
As well there are descriptive synonyms, which are characterized by their descriptive meaning
For inner satisfaction will bring.”
1) “She is very confused, deluded, deranged and demented.”
1)“You’d think that all the people here were friendly, welcoming
open-hearted...”; 2)Her eyes shining, radiating looking directly at him.”
1) “ You have to believe , to have faith.”
2)” You will look in that mirror and you will be more then pretty, you will be beautiful.”
Landon’s smiling.”
4)” Jamie turns to look at him. Landon , wet, desperate, his eyes pleading.”
3)” She is smiling and looks almost cute....” ; “Jamie, her face lovely...”
11. 11. Graphical Synonym Representation
12. 12. Conclusion
None of the different ways of distinguishing English synonyms are independent. Each word in each group of synonyms should be distinguished in various aspects, for each word contains multidimensional nature in meaning, coloring and usage. We should connect the different aspects of synonyms systematically in order to understand and distinguish them clearly by using them in the appropriate context or sentence etc
