Pros & cons of Gabriel <ul><li>Pros </li></ul><ul><li>All NLs had a presence on the web (Malta did not have a website until 2003!) </li></ul><ul><li>Ability to search website, even if a NL itself did not have search engine </li></ul><ul><li>Cooperation, share knowledge, networking </li></ul><ul><li>Cons </li></ul><ul><li>Not able to search the catalogues/collections of the NLs  Enter TEL Project (2001) </li></ul>

From TEL Project to TheEuropeanLibrary.org <ul><li>TEL Project </li></ul><ul><li>2001-2004 - TEL Project - EU funded </li></ul><ul><li>Intended to create operational service from start, so business plan was part of project </li></ul><ul><li>TheEuropeanLibrary.org </li></ul><ul><li>Funded by the national libraries - for 3 years. </li></ul><ul><li>Now owned by CENL, Office set up May 2004 - 4.5 FTE </li></ul><ul><li>The 9 Full Participants are the national libraries of Britain, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland ( collections searchable ) </li></ul><ul><li>Other 34 libraries are Basic Participants </li></ul>

The European Library at launch (17-3-05) <ul><li>The 9 Full Participants have created access to 150 collections, 11 million records, 500K digitised objects. </li></ul><ul><li>Incorporated much of former Gabriel site (Full and Basic participants) </li></ul><ul><li>Operational on KB systems – shares hard and software </li></ul><ul><li>Multi-lingual with the portal interface in 8 of the 37 CENL languages </li></ul><ul><li>Beta release – do load testing, get user feedback to improve site & fix known bugs </li></ul><ul><li>Strong on and offline marketing and communication plan </li></ul>
