SURGEON♣ Must have the knowledge, skills andjudgment required to successfully performthe intended surgical procedure and anydeviations necessitated by unforeseendifficulties.♣ Must be prepared for the unexpected.♣ Responsibilities include pre-operativediagnosis & cure, selection & performanceof surgery & post-operative managementof care.♣ Licensed physician (MD), oral surgeons,etc.♣ Appropriate clinical skills & personalcharacter are important attributes of asurgeon.

ASSISTANTS TO THESURGEONSURGEON* Under the direction of the operatingsurgeon, one or two assistants help tomaintain visibility of the surgical site,control bleeding, close wounds, and applydressing.* Handles tissues & uses instruments* Anticipates blood loss, anesthesia time forpatient, fatigue affecting OR team &potential complications 
  4. 4. *1*1STSTASSISTANT IN SURGERYASSISTANT IN SURGERY Qualified surgeon or a resident doctor Capable of performing procedures forprimary surgeon Post-graduate intern & medical intern Surgeon may request assistance of anassociate physician w/ whom the surgicalprocedure is shared & to whom part ofpatient’s care is delegated
  5. 5. *NON-PHYSICIAN 1STASSISTANTRequired to complete a formal educationprogram for 1stassistant according to theirpractice discipline *PHYSICIAN’S 1STASSISTANT (PA)Must have additional surgical training*SCRUB PERSONis a patient care staff member of thesterile team.Responsible for maintaining the integrity,safety and efficiency of the sterilefield throughout the surgical procedure.

Others(The OR team may include biomedicaltechnicians, radiology technicians, andothers who may be needed to set up andoperate specialized equipment ormonitoring devices during the surgicalprocedure) The unsterile team members DO NOTenter the sterile field. They handle supplies and equipments thatare not considered sterile. 
  7. 7. 1.ANESTHESIA PROVIDE1.ANESTHESIA PROVIDEThis refers to the person responsiblefor the inducing anesthesia,maintaining anesthesia at the requiredlevels, and managing untowardreactions to anesthesia throughout thesurgical procedure. Following the principles ofaseptic technique, they keep thesterile team supplied.

CIRCULATOR* The circulator plays a role that is vital tothe smooth flow of events before, during,and after the surgical procedure.* The circulator’s role as a patient advocateand protector is critical to the safety andwelfare of the patient and extendsthroughout the entire pre-operativeenvironment.
