  1. 1. www.knowledgee.com Research Management & Publishing The role of ORCID in the research information ecosystem November 14, 2016 | Abu Dhabi Martin Jagerhorn http://orcid.org/0000-0003-1937-9172 Chief Innovation Officer m.jagerhorn@knowledgee.com
  2. 2. • Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? • What does the research information ecosystem look like, and what are the challenges? • How can the use of ORCID IDs in Research Management Systems and Publishing Systems address the challenges? 2 Topic The role of ORCID in the research information ecosystem
  3. 3. • Reputation is key to success for the researcher • The reputation of the research is evaluated... • when being recruited • when recruiting to attract talent • to get faculty funding & competitive grant funding • Reputation is gained through the... • volume and quality of publications • research activities and amount of funding • research group’s and university’s collective reputation 3 Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? Taking the perspective of reputation for the researcher
  4. 4. • Researchers often feel a stronger affiliation with the research group, department and domain they belong to than the overall university • Still: researchers benefit from the university’s reputation and the university benefits from the researcher’s reputation • University = Holding Company with many business units / research groups to care for: • Market the institution and position it as leading in selected domains • Facilitate collaborations • Provide support services to the researchers to enable them to succeed in publishing, getting funding, recruiting talent • Invest in infrastructure, minimize administration 4 Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? The Role of the Research Institution
  5. 5. Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? Pro-active support along the full research lifecycle Attract talent Increase collaborations Produce high quality publications Make efficient and effective use of available funding Increase success rates, and external research funding Generate more high impact, innovative project ideas Produce more patents & license agreements Generate more spin-outs, products, expertise, services, … Pro-active Research Management
  6. 6. Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? Connecting the dots for high quality information
  7. 7. • Individual researchers • ORCID ID, Employee number, Email address (e.g. LinkedIn), ResearcherID, Scopus Author ID, ... • Organisations • GRID, ISNI, Ringgold, ... • Publications • CrossRef, mEDRA • Research data • CrossRef, DataCite • Thematic areas • MeSH, ISI Subject Categories, ... 7 Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? IDs for connecting the dots
  8. 8. 8 Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? Publishing Workflow connecting with the same dots Scopus Author ID Researcher ID ISI Subject Categories Funder ID Grant number
  9. 9. • The institution needs to be able to answer key questions in order to facilitate for the researchers to become successful • In what research fields are we strong or weak? • What collaborations do we have, which ones do we want to have? • Which researchers contribute well and which not so well to volume, quality, funding, collaborations? • ... • To answer these questions, the institution needs to proactively manage information on the researchers, their activities and results AND collect the information while not burdening the researcher • This requires ORCID IDs to be used in internal as well as external systems to connect the dots and automatically reuse the data 9 Why are ORCID IDs important for both researchers and their institution? Conclusions
  10. 10. What does the research ecosystem look like? Many interactions with internal & external systems International Office / Communications Department Library Research Office Post-Award / Finance Team Research Office Pre-Award Team Technology Transfer Office (TTO) The Researcher Funders: Grant calls Grant Management SystemsFunders: Reporting back on results Publishers: Submission systems Patent office: Patent databases University websites Social Media
  11. 11. How can ORCID IDs address the challenges? Case example: Dr. Jane Doe submits manuscript Jane Doe, Dep. of Business ORCID ID 0000-0001-5442-5838 Submit manuscript Journal or Conference using KnE Publishing Platform Check if ORCID ID exists for all authors ...then use, otherwise register Register DOI Article published Auto-update: Update author record
  12. 12. 12 Search ORCID directly from CONVERIS to pull in an author’s outputs
  13. 13. 13 ORCID INTEGRATION WITH THOMSON REUTERS SCHOLARLY RESEARCH PRODUCTS Publications synchronized with ORCID within Converis
  14. 14. 14 KnE Publishing Platform ORCID ID per author 0000-0003-1937-9172 ORCID INTEGRATION WITH THOMSON REUTERS SCHOLARLY RESEARCH PRODUCTS ORCID Premium Membership is required for data synchronization to be enabled with CONVERIS.
  15. 15. • Develop an overall approach to proactively manage research information: • Make use systems that support the use of ORCID and other relevant IDs • Establish a process to ensure systematic use of ORCID IDs among the researchers • Train staff at library and research office to use data and provide adequate support towards end-users • Work with end user engagement to support them use ORCID IDs and benefit from services for publishing, applying for grants and recruiting talent 15 Conclusions & Recommendations Increase your scientific impact now!
