Abstract:
Society for Neuroscience (SfN) plans to integrate ORCiD identifiers with the related account registration processes that currently occur in the Association Management System (AMS). Wherever possible, SfN aims to filter transactional member and nonmember interactions through the AMS, Personify. Personify is a modular, enterprise system that supports the full range of business and administrative activities required by the association. It is a best-of-breed system that accommodates integrations through its open framework, through Application Programming Interface (API) technology. SfN hopes this integration will help resolve current challenges the Society faces on a regular basis including: 1) The movement of researchers between various institutions 2) Duplicate records in Personify 3) Misplacement of SfN member IDs The Society’s website, SfN.org, is a hub of neuroscience news and information using state of the art technology to help communicate the value of membership to its users. Personify is leveraged on SfN.org through an SSO/login and account registration processes. The three integration points where ORCiD will be integrated on SfN.org through Personify are: 1) SfN.org Account Creation – site visitor wishes to create an account with SfN to purchase a product, sign up for alerts, etc. 2) Join/Renew Membership Workflows – an individual seeks to join or renew SfN membership 3) My Profile / My SfN – an individual logs into the My SfN section to leverage personalized content The current ORCiD integration status into Personify is an on-going effort with a projected completion date in August 2014. After entering into an evaluation period post-launch, SfN will determine next steps and validate future initiatives based off member interest and integration statistics.

Society for Neuroscience ORCiD Integration

  1. 1. RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATION DESIGN © 2012 www.PosterPresentations.com - Introduction - As a large scientific organization with a sophisticated data management strategy and operations, SfN recognizes the importance and challenge of distinguishing among researchers and maintaining data integrity across systems and disciplines. ORCiD’s mission to solve name ambiguity via a central registry is an important step toward promoting accuracy and integrity in scholarly research, an endeavor central to SfN’s commitment to supporting neuroscience research and creating venues for great science. With over 40,000 members in more than 90 countries, SfN is the world’s largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system. Given its large membership, the Society also has a strong history of leveraging technology to enhance scientific collaboration and efficient Society operations. SfN leaders invest in technologies as a crucial strategy, and SfN members also tend to be early adopters of technology solutions. This investment also sparks innovations that serve the larger scientific society community. This commitment to technology and innovation extends to our vendor partners as well, ensuring that the Society is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the field. SfN.org/ORCiD Integration Overview - Project Overview - Schedule One year project divided into phases which are concluded by key project milestones such as ORCiD onsite visit, Chicago Outreach Meeting and Go Live Cost Grant Funded Stakeholders SfN’s membership base is 42,000 individuals in 90 different countries Project Team Composition Project management led effort with core team members in IT and Marketing including executive oversight on critical decisions and guidance Communications Strategy Newsletter, online news articles, social media, word of mouth - Next Steps - Short Term: SfN plans to go through one more phase of development, testing and bug fixes. Before August 2014 Go Live, SfN will begin implementing its communication plan and will start evaluation plan preliminary conversations. Long Term: After a thorough evaluation plan, SfN will consider integrating ORCiD identifiers into SfN’s abstract submission and meeting registration process. SFN’s annual meeting draws roughly 30,000 registrants with nearly 16,000 abstracts submitted for review. - References/Contacts - Scott Moore, scott@sfn.org, Director of Technology Services Nick Fletcher, nfletcher@sfn.org, Project Manager - Objectives - Before the start of project work, SfN identified the following objectives: o Allow SfN members to accurately distinguish themselves and their activities from other researchers, minimizing misidentification o Centrally maintain research activities with SfN and ORCiD, two organizations positioned to reach across disciplines and national boundaries (approximately 38% of SfN’s members reside outside of the U.S.) o Benefit from efficiencies where common information is not re-entered across systems o Improve data integrity in Personify SfN.org Account Creation Sequence Diagram- Abstract - Society for Neuroscience (SfN) plans to integrate ORCiD identifiers with the related account registration processes that currently occur in the Association Management System (AMS). Learning and applying OAuth as none of SfN’s resources have previous experience with this authentication method 2. Placement of integration points online so not to deter members from renewing their membership
