  3. 3. Promoting a global response tomultiple chronic diseases in the age of social media: the OPIMEC experience
  4. 4. This experience is the project OPIMEC, the Spanish acronym for the Observatory of Innovative Practices for Complex Chronic Disease Management
  5. 5. OPIMEC is a nonprofit initiative that harnesses the power of online social media to exchange and develop knowledge and experiencies, across geographical, organizational and cultural boundaries
  6. 6. When we first made contact with OPIMEC we felt as if we was on cloud nine
  7. 7. We mean the idea of researching new care models
  8. 8. of using online social media
  9. 9. and of working with Alex Jadad, a respected professorfrom the University of Toronto was novel and tremendously exciting
  10. 10. Little by little we landed and, just over two years later, we havemanaged to go from science fiction to real life, developing an online social media approach to chronic disease
  11. 11. And, through this, something tangible. One of the results of our work is a book on polypathology that gathers the best availableknowledge and the most relevant research gaps about this major challenge to our health systems.
  12. 12. The next slides describe the ten main features of OPIMEC as an online social media, ending with the book and other efforts related to the co-creation of knowledge
  13. 13. Critical Mass 02 Aim 01 Contents 04 Leadership No SPAM 03 05 These first five features are what OPIMEC has,
  14. 14. Critical Mass 02 Aim User-friendliness 06 01 Innovation Contents 07 04 Leadership No SPAM 03 05 the sixth and seventh are what OPIMEC must be and the rest
  15. 15. Critical Mass 02 Participation Aim User-friendliness 10 06 01 Innovation Acknowledgement Contents 07 04 09 Leadership No SPAM Connection 03 05 08 are what OPIMEC network needs to be really useful to health and social professionals.

  20. 20. 02 Critical Mass
  21. 21. People with two or more chronic 02 Critical Mass diseasesOne of our top challenges is that we don’t have precise data on the prevalence of polypathology. Based on the current best estimates, there are from 700,000 to 2 billion people with two or more chronic diseases in the world
  22. 22. People with two or more chronic02 Critical Mass diseases 2005 9-31% Thats between 9 and 31% of the world´s population. And it is estimated that these numbers will double by the year twenty fifty
  23. 23. People with two or more chronic02 Critical Mass diseases 2050 2005 40% 9-31%That will be about 40%. One of our research priorities is to promotecollaborative research on classification and detection of co-existing complex chronic diseases.
  24. 24. 02 Critical Mass
  25. 25. 02 Critical Mass
  26. 26. 02 Critical Mass A huge global problem that involves many people A big global problem requires a big global response. 54. 54. 06 User-friendliness Firstly, user-friendliness. By this we mean that we are making efforts continuously to make the tools easy to use, intuitive, accesible, adapted to the user´s needs. In sum, we seek an excellent user experience. Online social media are constantly evolving and there is a lot of room to improve their usability
  55. 55. 07 InnovationInnovation is essential tous.We offer an applicationthat should appeal toeveryone. In this sense, OPIMEC hasthe LiveDok applicationwhich means LiveDocument for Knowledgeco-creation. This opensource technology enablesthe user to develop adocument in twolanguages through thecomments from otherusers
  56. 56. 07 InnovationIt complements the othertwo aspects of OPIMECinnovation.Firstly the methodology ofcollaborative edition ofknowledge...
  57. 57. 07 Innovationand secondly theapplication of conceptsbased on Copyleft andContributorship. Copyleftpromotes the exchange ofwork without restrictionand Contributorshipacknowledges the work ofmembers of collaborativegroups.
  58. 58. 08 ConnectionTo take full advantage of all of the technology, methodology and concepts available, it’s necessary to have a good Internet connection and open web access, specially from work and through mobile devices, and of course, to have basic knowledge of online social media.
  59. 59. 09 Acknowledgement We believe that there is a big opportunity for individuals and organizations to be recognized for their contributions through social media
  60. 60. 10 ParticipationAnd, finally, the most important element to make social media work, is participation. You only need to follow three easy steps:
  61. 61. 10 Participation JoinStep 1. Join OPIMEC, be part of its growing global community;
  62. 62. 10 Participation SharStep 2. Share, specially your experiences, your practices, but also documents, information on events, news... and
  63. 63. 10 Participation
  64. 64. 10 Participation
  65. 65. 10 Participation Co-createStep 3. Start co-creating knowledge by networking with the rest of the world! That is what around seventy people achieved last year
  66. 66. 10 Participation Co-create they participated in an experiment for the co-creation within a year and from scratch of a book on polypathology. Volunteers contributed from all over the world, simultaneously, in English and Spanish, by using OPIMEC with no financial incentives. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first attempt to co-create knowledge, globally around a health issue, using Web 2.0 and social networking tools and following the principles of contributorship and copyleft. It was an exciting adventure!
  67. 67. We collected state-of-the-art information on thefollowing ten differentaspects of polypathology,we gathered communities ofexperts around them, identified gaps inknowledge and elicitedideas on innovativestrategies to address them.

  69. 69. At the same time, this experiment set an example,in record time, for global knowledge co-creation around major health challenges, transcending traditional boundaries.
  70. 70. What did we learn during the• It is essential toprocess? have a clear common goal, a diverse editorial group, and institutional support• Matching versions of the same document in multiple languages is difficult• Firm deadlines for contributions must be set and enforced• Technological glitches are unavoidable• Copyleft and contributorship are viable options These are some keys we learnt during the process of knowledge co-creation
  71. 71. Some ongoing co-creation projects And, some ongoing co-creation projects that we are involved in, are:- A report for consultation by the European Commissionon Active and Healthy Ageing.
  72. 72. Some ongoing co-creation projects- A declaration for improving the care quality of people with chronic diseaseswhich is driven by Spanish scientific societies. Its first version was presentedlast January in Seville and its second version will be presented in May this year,at the Spanish Conference on Chronic Care in San Sebastian
  73. 73. Some ongoing co-creation projects- An Strategic Andalusian Plan about caring for people with chronic diseases. Itwill be launched at the Care Quality Forum that will be celebrated in October inGranada, where I would be delighted to see you all.-And the last created team on OPIMEC was the European Grant PlanningCommittee to define a research agenda around the systems of health and socialcare for elderly individuals with complex needs that will provide usefulinformation to decision makers.
