You are right dear Nubia, one of benefits of the fast is purify the body. But this isn’t all nor first. The first is purify the spirit. We have an internal power, it’s name is 'nefs' (sorry I can’t found an appropriate equivalent for this word/concept). His duty is notify us about physical and biological needs, such as nutrition, thirst, sleep, etc. Sadly he has a bad habit: he don’t know the word 'enough', always says 'more, more, more...' When we are in the fast, we says to our nefs : 'look, here the boss is me; this is me to decide when, where and how much is enough or not, not you!'.

Limiting the 'nefs' in nutrition, thirst, sleep, etc (and continue do this limitations for all phases of the life), limits also other bad sentiments and behaviors; such as lying, egoism, harm to anyone in any manner, fighting for other than self-defense, etc.

Like all rules and proficiency conditions of Islam, goal of the fast too, is human perfection; moving people to a better level, to a people more peaceful, more civil, more happy.

Sorry, this is a little (!) long speech :(

But I couldn’t answer your question in shorter than this.

A last point : one of most important rule of Islam is respect to belief of everybody; without criticize, contemn or forbid. This include sublime their own; so my goal isn’t promoting Islam, only a little work for answer your question, satisfy your curiosity, as soon as possible.

    Regards

  • Hi George

    Don't worry !

I hope that you can be patient for a 10-12 hours maximal. Because abstaining is for daytime only. At night you can cook and eat any frequency you like ( and can ;) ) :)

    Regards
